Weird clicking sound when starting.
Hi all,
I took my rappy out the other day only to run into a snag. I had her all ready to go and when I began to start her there was this weird clicking sound. At first it was not bad and she fired up ok. Then she died. I tried again and the click was worse. I could not start here after that. The started shaft did not want to turn her over. I tried with my fingers and I could not turn the starter shaft. Long story short, took her home, pulled the engine out and checked the clutch, started shaft etc... I thought it was the one way. I checked all the things over only to notice that the fan assembly had come loose and worked its way up the threads a little. I took it all apart and reassemble the unit ensuring there was adequate locktite. Everything looked good so I put the engine back in and all was good. Oh and I checked the one way and added some more grease. It looked fine. I took her out again the next day and there was the weird clicking sound again. The heli stated and flew fine but whenever I start here there is a weird clicking sound, Its not the started I know this for sure. Its something in the starter shaft/clutch assembly. Is it possible the one way is really dead. If so I will need to buy a new clutch right? Any help would be great.

So, if your one way bearing is out then you need a clutch?
Get help from a seasoned pilot. |

As far as I can tell the one way is part of the clutch. I did some further investigating and the noise appears to be coming from the engine. I was a little worried that perhaps something had broken inside the crank case so I pulled the engine out and gave it a once over. Everything seems fine so I put the engine back in the heli. I also checked everything else over again and all seems fine. I guess the noise is not really so much a clicking sound but more a popping sound which I believe is the sound this engine is making. I am pretty careful with my engines (old habits from my nitro truck racing days) soI amjust going to keep an eye (or ear) on the noise and see how she goes. By the way the bird flies fine its just a noise I have never heard before. Maybe I am just being paranoid. Thanks for your help anyways.

Check the pin in the tail rotor pulley it has most likely backed out and is lodged into the tail case.

If those suggestions does not work. I will check the belt might have loosen up and the clicking is the teeth
on the belt tighten the belt and put a piece of electrical tape on the tail tube insert back into the frame and tighten back up. I believe that is the clicking sound you hear

I still dont know what it is. I am certain it is coming from the motor but I could be wrong.
I also have a sneaking suspicion it is coming from the starter shaft assembly. It is possible that the bearings in this have gone bad. I just dont want to have to pull apart half my heli to investigate. Is there an easier way to get to this?

Yes, the one way bearing is built into the clutch, its only a $10 part so its no the tend of the world, while you have it apart i would also suggest clutchbell bearings if they havent been replaced, seeing as you'll already have it apart.

your starter shaft isnt rubbing on the blade grip when starting is it? When Im not carefull I have a clicking issue when starting but it is the shaft hitting the grips.

Good point but no the blades are not rubbing.
I am pretty confident that the problem lies with the starter assembly. I just can not be buggered to pull it out to take a look. The only way I can see the removak of that thing is to pull the frame apart and that is quite a job., Thanks

I wouldn't call myself a pro.
One thing I do know is that you need to use common sense and look at all possibilities. Don't be afraid to take it apart. The clutch and the one way bearing are two different parts completely, if the one way is bad, replace the one way, not the clutch. Make sense? The fan backing out/off sounds more likely. Does it have a governor? Magnet hitting sensor? There are so many possibilities! The reason I say get some help from a seasoned pilot is because stuff like this is very hard to diagnose over the internet, an in person look at it is what is needed, and likely a tear down to find the problem. |

Dont worry I am not afraid to take it apart, I enjoy building these guys more than I like flying.
I will take it apart and check out the starter assembly. I actually think that the bearings for the started assembly have gone bad. We'll see soon I guess. Anyways I just want to thank you for all your advice. Cheers.
