New 2S conversion
I've always liked my v120d02s, and flew it daily for quite awhile. I moved to bigger helis and my little bird got shelved for awhile. Looking for something to fly in the back yard, I dusted it off and it still flies great but I was a little disappointed in how quickly the power dropped off.
I was already using a XP12A esc, and I switched out the stock motor for a TA915 motor and some nanotech 950 batteries I had in the parts box that I had never got around to using. A nice power increase, but still a disappointingly quick drop-off in power. I had gotten used to flying 3D for 5 minutes or so with my bigger helis, and it seemed that I only had a minute or two for 3D, then had a lot of trouble doing even a flip or roll or decent funnel. I searched some older threads and decided to try converting to 2S. I went with the HP08 2S motor and Hyperion 320 mAh 2S batteries and used a diode to step the voltage down to protect the stock servos. I took my first test flight and WOW, very impressive. My timer was set at 4 minutes and I had plenty of power through that. But jeez, talk about a hummingbird on crack. Just too much headspeed I guess. I'm using a 10t pinion and 80% throttle curve with no governer. I figured on switching out the pinion to a 9t, but I'm looking for advice on the best way to tame this little beast down a bit without losing that excellent power thoughout the flight. I hate to lower the throttle curve any more as I've read it's best to run a brushless motor close to 100% Any advice from those of you who have converted? I've never been I big fan of governed headspeeds but If that is the best way, how does one do that with the XP12A esc? Thanks |
