Default 6s thinking out loud

I was reading an older thread where someone setup their TDR as a dedicated low headspeed machine on 6s.

I have been flying mine on 12s at around 1300-1350 ish.

Does anyone know what sort of average and peak amps you draw at those headspeeds?

I have a Jive 80HV on it now which is great on 12s but I'm not sure if it could still handle 1300 rpm on 6s as it would be roughly double the amps.

Maybe this is all a silly idea anyway. My motivation is the idea of getting more flights out of the same batch of 4000 and 5000mah packs. Also it would be crazy light with only a single pack, something like 700 grams less!

Not tried with my TDR but my Synergy with similar specs flies well at 1000 Rpm. The amazing thing is that it can stay up for about 14/15 minutes on a 5000ma 6S battery!
Its all down to the fact that the cost to double the head spead is the power squared as well as a significant weight saving, it will not draw double amps, quite the opposite. Check out the YT videos for TDR and Synergy, Matt Botos has done a few worth watching.
Not TDR but see
Synergy E7 - Extreme Low Head Speed (9 min 52 sec)
for some ideas and explanation.

I have flown my TDR at ~1100 rpm on a 6s 3700 mah pack for about 8 mins.
Never checked the amp draw, but everything came down cool.

The thing is, I'm already flying it at 1200-1300 on 12s, so yeah it will be nearly double if I run the same headspeeds on 6s, just the lower weight will come into play. (I would be using a different motor and pinion).

I have a feeling it's probably still OK though.

If I could ever get this Jlog to work I could check the amps. I suppose I could temporarily put a Kosmik on it just to get some logs.

I run my 7HV at 1100, with a 6s 5000mah. I get 11 minutes on sport flying.
It hovers at 20 amps and peaks at 130amps.

Trillian,

I run Jlogs on most of my heli's. Your welcome to PM me offline and I'll see if I can help you out, and get yours going.

Cheers for now...

KV is a bit low but may be possible with pinion change. Ideally a 600kv motor would work better

Earlier this year I cobbled together one of Ben's old Raptor 550s, with a 600 boom conversion and 600mm blades that runs 6s for buddy box training. It's running a 4020-1100kv Scorpion motor, YEP80LV, 111t main and 9t pinion, which gives a max head speed of around 1,800rpm.

It's still a very capable machine for gentle 3D and sports flying. I can happily tic-toc etc. due to the light weight. The only downside is that it's a bit too light in windy conditions, so the wind can catch the disc quite easily.

The motor, ESC and 6s packs come down cool, even after 9-10 minutes of smooth 3D and constant transitions. It's actually a very nice relaxing heli to fly, just shows there's nothing wrong with old designs either. There's no way to measure amp draw on the YEP, though I've pushed the heli around plenty and not had any beeps or shutdowns due to over amping.

I also seem to remember when I first built my Faifa 800 I ran it 6s with a Pyro 700-52 and Jive 80HV!. So I can't see any problems running the TDR on 6s at 1,300-1,400rpm

Right now I'm running with an Align 750mx / 450 motor and 13 tooth pinion. My idle-1 is 57% in the TX which looks like about 1350 headspeed according to Mr Mel.

So what I would do for a 6s setup is a 630KV motor and 18 tooth pinion, which is slightly lower headspeed for the same throttle % and would give it 1350 at somewhere between 60 and 63% throttle which is pretty much in the Jive governor sweet spot.

I also have a 16 tooth pinion which would drop the headspeed about 100 rpm further.

The approx takeoff weight would only be right around 4.2kg depending on the pack and blades. Soooooo, I don't know, maybe too light disc loading, too floaty, it's hard to say.
I could put 690s on it instead of 710s.

If you plan to keep the same headspeed you will not achieve a whole lot, making it lighter will alow you to run lower headspeeds which will give slightly longer flights.

Yeah, it's probably a pointless exercise. I don't know if I'd like the way it flies at 700-800 grams lighter. The advantage would be the ability to do more flights or carry less LiPos. Less charging etc.

I suppose I could kinda simulate the effect if I could fit two 6s 2500mah packs side my side (or some other way to get the correct balance) I could run a superlight 12s setup just to see how it flies.
