Default Trex 550 and 5s lipo Question.

Hi,

Excuse if those sounds dumb I just picked up a Trex 550e, now can you run it with a 5S 5300mah lipo?

Why? Because I have 7 of them 5s and only one 6s that came with it and funds have been redirected somewhere else.

Thanks.

If your ESC accept the configuration, i think the motor will be pulling so many amps in low head speed that will fry the ESC. The Motor will be fine. The ESC will be running too Hard in my Opinion unless that you change the Motor Pinion for a 10T and stay with 520 Blades and keep the RPMs in 1600 to 1800 with a sport or scale fly style.

This is assuming that the Align or Talon (stock ESC) accept 5S batteries.

It won't be efficient. Everything will come down blazing hot - and like said above - failures become ever more possible.

If you're on a budget just grab a turnigy pack for $50 until you can get something better. Also, check the for sale forums here. There have been a lot of great deals on packs here recently i've seen.

I have 2 x 5s 5000mah 40C that originally were 6s that had a duff cell each. I use them for a warm up flight with no problem. I run them in Idle 1 instead of 2 and run 4 minutes instead of 4.5 minutes. They come down warm.

It will be fine, nothing will get blazing hot or fry. The loss of one cell (~17% voltage drop, 5s fully charged is actually pretty close to 6s at the end of the flight) will be compensated by reduction of various drags that come with lower headspeed. Optimal? No. Possible? Certainly.

Even more possible if he also got a 15 or 1600KV motor and geared it accordingly. But at that price you could just buy the battery.

Well, no, I would keep the motor and gearing and just fly with lower headspeed (~17% lower ). This heli can be flown (in 3D fashion, for almost all definitions of "3D") at sub 2000 headspeeds without issues. I don't know if low HS flying is still considered hot or if it's so last year but I for one do and always will enjoy it. I just started flying my 700-class heli on 10s (low HS, lower weight, perfect for learning) without changing anything and I'm loving it.

Thanks for the opinions. If I were to buy 6s lipos, would a 20 or 25c do it, or so I need a 40 or more c's?

Thanks.

It depends how you fly? I started off with 20/25C, then 30C. Now I am using 40/45C.

I think will be easier just getting batteries. Thanks for the help.
