Default How many employed by Cad/Cam?

I've been using CAD since middle school. Self taught although I took a standard drafting class in high school which was a big help. Making pretty models is easy but worthless if you can't convey the details in conventions everyone understands. I taught the high school CAD class for extra credit but they used CrapCAD. Maybe that wasn't the actual name. I got a degree in mechanical engineering and now manage the family business. But I like to slam my hobbies and work together into an indistinguishable mess. My avatar is a rendering of part of my turbine Heli I've been modifying. I mostly use Autodesk Inventor now.

I'm a mechanical engineer at a private space company. I use NX all day everyday for the past 5 years, i came from Pro-E before that. I specialize in electronics packaging but i do all sorts of stuff, a lot of tooling and fixtures.

I started in highschool doing hand drawings, then started using robocad. I'm not that old(31) but i guess my highschool was.

I'm a solid surface countertop fabricator/installer/rc helipilot... or wannabe anyway. Strictly 2D using MasterCam Router. I'm mostly self taught. Also have made high end speaker enclosures and other random hi end things for customers. Currently cutting on an Onsrud CNC with Osai control, 5'x12' table with a 21hp router and 12 tool carousel. Someday would like to learn Solid Works or similar.

This thread is very relevant to me since I actually work for SolidWorks the company! Before joining SolidWorks I used the software for about 8 years designing thermo plastic injection molds. It's really great to see so many customers here using SolidWorks, and as I do some research on the manufacturers, many of them are SolidWorks customers as well. Of course that's pretty common now a days in lots of industry.

I'm just getting into the hell hobby and about to get my first one. What led me here was watching videos of the MakerBot Replicator 2 where some guys were printing copter parts. MakerBot is a SolidWorks customer and after visiting them last week, I just had to order one of their machines. It is supposed to arrive here this week.

So if anyone has any SolidWorks questions, feel free to hit me up, hopefully I can answer them!

Using solidworks 2010, why can't I snap lines and points at major angles of a circle ala unigraphics? Is this just not a feature? I use reference geometry now, but with all the snaps and tool bars I don't know if I can make this happen in SW.

Regards,

Steve

Sketching a line to one of the quadrants (0,90,180,270) has always been pretty easy. For the other 'major' angles (45,135,225,315) with the line tool active, click the circle near those areas and wait about a second before moving your cursor away, as you start to move away after waiting you should then see a light yellow line going through the circle center points on this 45 degree angles.

I just tried this in 2013 and it works great. What it creates is a line that is perpendicular to the circle, but if you do it at one of the 45's, it will inference at that angle. You'll then have to add a relation to fully define it.

This should work in 2010 as well, and here is a blog post from 2007 showing how to do it:

http://solidsmack.com/cad/how-to-mak...in-solidworks/

The key is to be patient until that yellow 'X' shows up, then drag your line away from the circle.

Default plastic injection mold maker.

I am a mold maker by trade. Use solidworks, autocad, and inventor for cad and powermill and mastercam for cam.
