Default helicopter from the movie "Avatar"

i was watching the movie and noticed the heli they were flying. the one with 2 rotors and no tail rotor. is this a real heli or a "made up " heli for the movie. it looks like a good design.

Looks real cool.

Seems like a popular idea lately:

The closest thing I can think of is a harrier jet (two points of thrust, independently adjustable angles). I wouldn't expect to see that design in the picture made in real life. Turbo fans are just too efficient.

There are chinooks, which have two sets of rotos, but they are aligned axially along the body of the heli, and directions are controlled like a heli instead of by tilting the whole blade plane.

There would also be a lot of difficulties in constructing something like that. You need to power both rotors (belt drive might not cut it), and you need to power the twisting motion of the blades. I think there would be huge moment loads applied at the connection. This coupled with inefficiencies is probably why we don't see these today. Just my thoughts.

An Osprey tilt rotor is alot like it but without the circular enclosures surrounding the rotors.

there is very low gravity on pandora, so its easier for things to fly, including mountains

Just my .02
As cool as those things look I dont think that would be possible.
The artillery wings or whatever you would call them are directly in the downwash of the rotors. Not to mention the incrediably difficult mechanics it would take for the drive system.

Reality aside, they sure were bad "donkey" in the movie though!
