Default DLE 30 for a trex 700N

so as I research gassers it looks like Zenoha has the market on gasser conversions. I understand the OS GT15HZ is a drop in replacement for the OS 91HZ but there are reliability issues. my question is what makes Zenoha the engine of choice and has anyone built a gasser with a DLE 30?

I happen to have a DLE 30 side carb in need of a home and I blew the piston in my 91hz so if I have to spend $200 on a rebuild it might be a good time to start a conversion.

thanks

I'm not aware of anyone that's made any heli for a DLE. A couple problems I can think of you would have to overcome.

#1 - Its a fixed wing form factor engine so you would have to figure out mounts for it and a way to attach a clutch where the prop hub is. All the Zenoah conversion use the PUH (heli) or RC (car) format engine already made for a clutch

#2 - Also because its a fixed wing engine its ported and carburetted to make best power at lower RPMs than heli engines. Its probably happy around 7000-8000 rpm, vs the 12,000 or so Zenoah conversion run at. This means that you would need to design a much shorter gear ratio to get good power from it. It might vibrate worse as well.

the original Whiplash Gas prototype used a DLE 30

Originally there was a version of that engine with a side intake which made it usable in a helicopter. That version was discontinued though and AFAIK its only available with a rear carb that points down into the ground

the engine didn't work out, its not powerful enough for a tall gear ratio to keep its running RPMs low and when it was spun it it vibrated pretty badly

it MIGHT work if the modifiers got a hold of it and worked some balancing/porting magic but at that point its not less expensive so not sure what it accomplishes

Thanks for those answers, they make sense. I didn't realize the zenoah engines used were built for cars, the only ones I've seen are on other modelers airplanes.

When looking for an engine is PUH a designation I should be looking for? Otherwise it seems Zenoah engines for marine use are available

I suggest you go to Carey's Gas Power thoughts forum next door and look in his article index. There is a series that gives an intro to engines and shows what the RC and PUH motors look like.

Basically when you shop for a kit or conversion kit it will specify which style its made for. RC format seems most common now, that's the one that has a cooling fan built in.
