Main gear not spinning?
My 450 had been sitting for a while (2-3weeks) but flew fine the last time it was up. The other day I was hovering my first pack when suddenly the heli started to descend. I was able to land without damaging anything. Upon further inspection I noticed the main gear was not spinning with throttle applied. I could hear the motor respond to the throttle but the head would not spin. My belt was on correctly with adequate tension. Does this sound like my motor (430XL)?

Look to see if your motor can is spinning, then pinion.

Your pinion may have moved away from the main gear, the motor mount bolts could be loose and the whole motor shifted.

Your one way bearing could be bad also. Make sure you plugged you motor up correctly or it will spend the opposite way.

As for the motor wires I dont think thats it cause he said it was hovering when this happened, now bad one way is a deffinete possibility, but I would check the motor/pinion connection to the maingear, cause it could have backed away. |

I think it sounds like the pinion gear setscrew came loose

Yes, I can hear the motor. The bolt under the gears is in place & so is the nut, this bolt is tight. The two bolts holding the motor are also tight. Looking under the heli with throttle applied, I can see something in the bottom of the motor spinning. I take it this is the can? The motor pinion is flush against the main gear & the pinion spins when turning the main blades counter-clockwise. The tail drive gear is also flush against the autorotation gear. The tail drive gear spins when rotating the mains clockwise, allowing the belt to work the tail.
I'm leaning towards the one-way as a few of you pointed out. Is that one-way bearing tool worth the $4 or $5? If, so I'll grab one along with a new one-way. |

You did not say anything about checking the pinion. If the motor is spinning and the pinion is not, then tighten up the pinion set screw and see if that fixes it.

Fore the one way bearing to fail the motor pinion and the main gear have to spinn first, when onely the motorshaft is spinning and not the motor pinion then the pinion are not attached to the shaft ore the shaft is broken.
In the middle of the lower can lid there is a sticker marked 3700, remoove it and wach if the shaft and bearing are spinning inside.

If the main gear is not turning when you throttle up, then the motor is not driving it - it will have nothing to do with your one way bearing. If your main gear is turning, but your head is not, then it is either a broken "Jesus" bolt (which you say it isn't) or a stuffed one way.
As others have said, check if your pinion is turning - if it is but the main gear is not, then your mesh is a problem. If your pinion is not turning (and obviously the main gear will not be turning), then either the motor is not spinning, or the motor shaft is turning inside the pinion. To check if the motor shaft is turning (make it safe by either taking the blades off, or pulling out the main gear) and spin it up. You should be able to feel a vibration if it is spinning if you can't see something. Just work through it methodically - you will find the problem. Colin

After further inspection I noticed the pinion was loose after all. I cleaned the screw that secures the pinion, applied loctite and tightened the screw. The heli then responded as it should with throttle applied. I appreciate all the feedback.
I have a question regarding pinion placement on the shaft, however. Should the pinion be placed all the way down on the shaft or adjusted upward for a better mesh with the gear? Or does this not really matter as long as the pinion is secured? |

Put the pinion allmoust flush with the top of the main gear.
Allmoust becouse if the main gear have some wobble its better to have it just a litle higher so there is full contact all the way around. I you have a dremmel, grind a flat spot on the motor shaft fore the grub screw and the pinion wil not slip again.

According to Z T-Rex Manual (haha RTFM )
Quote "The top of the pinion gear should be set slightly (about 1/32”) above the main gear"... ... or for the zillion word pic ... This FYI brought to you if only for consistency and to play to the wider audience. Main gears vary, motors vary, shafts vary, pinions vary, opinions vary, users..... well there's no accounting for what they can get up to |
