MSRx BL Photo Log...
Many Thanks to Astroid Designs for the brushless motor and pre-flashed ESC. Great folks at Astroid! Also thanks to ~martin~ for his thread https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=493123 with clear pics and of course burnoutboy for the DIY and motivation.
I hope these pics help someone, I tried for ~martin~ level clarity! the patient and operating table Rakon frame and how the BL motor mount attaches main shaft side of motor mount BL motor mounted with red Loctite top view with BL mounted main board mounted |

sticky velcro for ESC mounting
ESC mounted and motor soldering done 50/50 shot of getting polarity right. Lucky I got it first try! helping hands helping power and signal soldered close up of the signal wire on the FET. It isn't as hard as you might think if you pre-tin the wire. After pre-tinning just heat up the solder on the wire and let it grab the foot of the FET adding battery leads at the same spot and ESC power source. Note that this is simply the backside of where the stock battery leads are soldered on at the factory. In other words the solder points pass through the board. I just used a razer to cut off the stock leads at the root on the other side. |

battery test...some new strange beeps from the ESC. Good sign!
spool up test with mCPX short boom, mCPX XTreme skids with boom support. Need new skids anyway for larger battery format. The throttle wont engage until you drop the stick at least once. much more rigid structure! A well Rakon'ed MSRx BL with XTreme touches and a MicroHeli CF tail note that I notched the canopy so it cannot interfere with the BL RTF Given the foul weather I haven't gotten a chance to really put it through its paces. Basic hovering in the garage. I will say the hover is rock solid and not twichy. The bird is heavier now (no problem for the motor) and the hover has been solid since I added the Rakon head. I can't wait to get this thing out in the backyard! |

Re: MSRx BL Photo Log...
Great write up!
One thing you really want to do is insulate or shorten the motor wires to the esc, I usually cut them shorter and re-tin the ends just long enough to get a good solder joint. If they touch each other or any part of the esc where they are tinned, your esc will let some smoke out. I thought I included some small heat shrink tubing, you could use that to insulate the motor leads, or some of the silicone jacket from the 24 gauge wire. The motor wires are enamel coated, and easy to tin with enough heat. I usually crank up the soldering iron to 450C to tin them, and back down to 350C for all other micro soldering tasks.

Thanks Dylan. You probably included it. Just because I'm lazy and don't feel like breaking out the Hakko do you think this liquid tape will work? I have some kicking around...

I'm not sure if anyone is reading this but just in case...
I got tired of waiting and took it out in the wind and rain. I had to drop the DR on the elevator because the extra weight gives the bird some serious nose attitude. On my first left turn I dropped the nose to start the turn and it pointed nearly strait down. I also went linear on the throttle curve to have better altitude control. The wind gusts of 8mph make the BL rise and the weight pulls it down fast as I cut the throttle so I'm finding I need more authority to modulate the throttle. With those TX changes it flies pretty much exactly like the stock MSRX but has much better wind capability. The weight and power make it a faster bird for certain. Not uncontrollable by any means, just smooth speed and control. Flight time is unchanged really. The one thing I plan to do when my XTreme MSR canopy set arrives is to try switching back to stock landing gear to see if it changes the birds attitude by changing the center of gravity. I might need less elevator to start banked turns with a lighter tail. We will see. Anyway - cool bird and I'm glad I did this mod! |

Awesome! What is the final weight as pictured?

Its heavier than stock by at least ~8 grams I'd say. I need to get a digital scale. I'm modding almost all my heli's so its pretty important that I get a scale. Ordering now LOL

Well this is a bit of a surprise. For one, my scale showed up in like a day. Second, this MSRX BL doesn't weigh that much. While I was at it I took measurements for the bird with just one essential mod: blade grips. Totally worth it if you do nothing else (just my opinion of course).
Bone stock Rakon grips only Brushless + ESC, Rakon Frame, Rakon BL motor mount, Rakon swash, rotor hub, blade grips, Microheli tail fin, Xtreme skids and boom support, MCPX short boom I'd be really curious to know the weight of other brushless conversions. The Astroid kit with the carbon fiber motor mount for the stock frame *must* be lighter than this. That said, this isn't very heavy! Overdone maybe, but light enough for all the added power. |

Had the BL out today. I had just come back from the field and I was pretty annoyed because my MCPX had a nasty crash due to a stuck servo. After about half a battery with the MSRX I remembered why I love these things. They are just great little birds. No pressure to go inverted, no super high head speeds, just a relaxing backyard flying experience. Now that I've had some time with the BL I can say that it pretty much feels stock when its calm. It still needs elevator/aileron correction for left banked turns and still banks right perfectly. I had more fun in the backyard than the field today for sure!

Dylan, I’m interested in playing around with this a bit more as I learn to fly a stock one. What would I need to add the BL tail motor on it as well?

How was your throttle set before?

It initially had a flat middle:
Low Stick : 0 % Quarter Stick : 43% Mid Stick : 50% ¾ Stick : 57% High Stick : 100% With settings like those its almost like having expo on your throttle. |
