Question Using a 3GX as a single axis gyro

I have a mongrel HK250 / Align 250 and need a new gyro to get it usable. As a beginner, attempting to fly without a tail hold gyro was "interesting".

Although I like the idea of FBL, I would need to replace the head, probably the servos, and need a more expensive gyro. As I'm still in the very early stages, it's pointless expense at the moment, but flybarless is the direction I'd like to go.

So, instead of buying a single axis gyro now, and later buying something like a 3GX, can I buy a 3GS now and use it as a single axis gyro? Theoretically I see no reason why not, but I suspect it depends on the software. It may just refuse to work without everything being connected. Just to be clear, I don't intend using flybar head and electronic stabilisation at the same time - I can't imagine the two systems playing nicely together. I just mean that I don't connect the 3 rotor head servos to the 3GX.

Any insights appreciated.

Default Using a 3GX as a single axis gyro

I don't think so. There other gryos that might be able too. It's a closed loop system & so it's all servos or none at all.
Look for the Align GP750. They worked the best on a 250. I still have mine but its on a CP Pro.

The instructions say don't....

BeastX is the only ones that specifically say they're OK to use as tail only I believe.

Now... that said... if you were using a full receiver, plus the 3GX (and not 3GX and sats only) it may function as a tail only gyro if you only plug in the rudder channel and tail servo. It's not going to be optimal...

If you intend to use the 3GX with sats only, then that's a solid NO.

But to be honest... if I was going to spend the money on a 3 axis gyro, a FBL head really isn't that much these days.... I'd say go FBL or don't go FBL. The amount of time and energy spent trying to get it to work may not be worth it. If it was a 'free' 3GX and a 'free' FB'ed hell I might be tempted to try.

Personally, I think you're setting yourself up for a bad experience by 'half assing' it.

If you want a tail gyro you can use as a receiver with Satellites, check out the Align GP900.

It looks like a 3GX, but tail-only...

when you use the beast x (not the spectrum one ) as tail gyro only you need to get an adaptor cable from beast x

Thumbs up Thanks for advice...

Sticking with flybar for now (until I smash up the rotorhead!) Although the individual bits of the FBL setup are not too expensive, they do add up. I suspect my servos may not be up to FBL spec, which adds more to the expense. After some poor experience setting up my 250 with my old gyro, I almost shelved the lot to get a Blade mCPx - a FBL which works out of the box!
But for now, I got a GP750 from ebay. I'll see how it goes.
