Align Servos
Getting tired of replacing the gears in my 2 Trex 500's every time I touch a blade of grass (slight exaggeration).
Does anyone know if the DS510's can be rebuilt with the 510m (metal gears).

Yes, you can replace the plastic gears of the ds510 with metal ones.
I used to have ds510 servos but they developed slop on their pot and i replaced the servos with futaba ones. Now i got many flights on them and they seem tired, so i ordered kst ds515mg.

KST gear sets are dirt cheap unlike Align ones, I also replaced my DS510M with DS515MG - time will tell how they perform.

I replaced the plastic gears in my 510's with the metal gears for the 515. Works great.
I'm also looking at replacing the servos since they're pretty old, and don't seem as precise as I would like. I've looked at the KST515's, but their specs aren't all that much more impressive than the Align servos. If I'm going to spend $65 per servo, I think I'm will to spend $25 more to get some really nice servos.

Amain has the KST's for $42. I run the KST215 in my 450 and love em. Still trying to decide whether to keep rebuilding the Aligns or bail out and go with KST. edit, it may be aloft not amain, I'll check again

Building a heliport helps a lot against grass landings. I use an old carpet and turn it upside down.
The Align servos for the 500L are very sensitive. A slight error damages them and you should replace them. I had critical situations with the electronics going crazy and the heli swithed to 45 degrees angle from a hover. Therefor a new servo is always cheaper than a dangerous crash. Sven |
