Default The big belt thread!

Hello

I have big belt issues, and have read alot of comments on the belt not lasting many flights, while others claim to have 300 pluss flights on the same belt (and fly hard 3D)

My latest belt lasted only three flights practicing F3N set maneuvers at sub 2000 headspeed, and that was after aligning the motor to the main shaft using a 90 degree carpenter ruler. That being said, I forgot to re-tighten the belt after the first flight, so it might have gotten loose.

Some use silicone spray, others don't.

Need tips and tricks to get my belt to last longer

Pleas people, pitch in, so we can fly this great helicopter with less stress!

Best regards
Børge Børge

Sounds very strange
My belt lasted about 200+ flights. I changed it because I have a pretty hard crash and I want to be sure.
None of my friends have striped any belt as far as I know.

Maybe any damage in the motor pulley???

Default belt

My belt has 200+ flights and a crash and its still going strong . Although this is not recommended. I wanted to see just how long one would last . The recommended swap out is to replace the belt after 100 flights just as a precaution.

After every flight i inspect my belt for wear and there is still none all i say is , WOW

I just changed my belt at 87 flights and I'm doing sport to mild 3d. I was running the belt extremely tight. This time I'm running it a bit looser and it's a lot quieter. It'll be interesting to see how many flights this one lasts.

OK, I found a reason that might have made me strip my belts after only 3 to 5 flights: Bad motor bearing.

Put new bearings in now, and hopefully my belt will also last 100s of flights.

Will report back on this

I NEED HELP!!!

Stripped another belt... This time during a show demo at the Disc Golf Norwegian championship with over 100 spectators...
This time the belt actually broke (pretty hard flight )

Most probable cause for stripping belts I think is misalignment of the motor parallel to the second stage gear and main shaft.

I found that my motor and mainshaft is not 100% aligned by using this method:

This should be perfect? Right??

No matter how hard I pull the motor upwards in front before tightening the front two screws,
I cant get it perfect aligned...

I even swapped motor mount plate with my 5.5, still same....

Hope I have not bent the main top plate.

I don't know why they went away from this idea that was on the prototypes.
It would insure both perfect alignment of motor to second stage gear and counterbearing AND it would help not to put as much stress on the motor bearings when running really tight belt.

Looks like it has the same slide function as the counter bearing in the production kit, and with the same screws on top of main plate, it should hold fine.

Even better would be a one piece, or an assembly with motor plate and counter bearing.

Somebody dropped the ball not including that in the production kit... Guess they wanted the extra revenue from belt sales

My guess is that there was some issues with the sliding plate, but it sure looks like a much better solution.

the better question would be why they swapped the Gates(also used in Goblin) belt for the current Optibelt product.

OK, so I have now bent the two posts that goes out to the motor mount from the top plate a little, and got the motor aligned with the main shaft.

This is how I did it:

It shows 0.1 deg difference, but the gauge was switching between 0.1 and 0.0, so I guess it's as good as it gets.

Flew one pack today, smacking it really hard, and no sign of damage to the belt. Will fly more tomorrow.

..and my new Zeal blades flys really good!! And they bark LOUD

What do you mean you bent the posts???? That sounds crazy to me...

BTW what size seals? Heard they were coming out with 750mm soon

I guess my top plate was slightly bent in the crash in the video below.

With SLIGHTLY bending the tabs in picture above, I got the motor perfectly aligned with main shaft.
If I pull the motor to get almost no flex in the belt (like Nel 3d describes in his video), the motor tilts a little, and I think the bearing in the motor gets damaged by that.

I just posted this in another thread. Guys, most us flying Sab's and Diabolos, and a few other brands using belts have discovered this stuff. Guys have gotten an average of 300+ flights using it where they reported having to replace them normally at about 60 flights or so. At least due to wear and tear not related with mechanical issues.
