Default Need help with components for a Goblin 380 Speed

Hi all,

I have aGoblin 380 airframe that I want to turn into a dedicated speed heli. I am looking for suggestions on a Scorpion motor and ESC that would work well for speed. I currently have a Talon 90 on it for regular flight, but I am wondering if I need a bigger ESC for speed?

Thanks for all of the help!

Brent

Brent, welcome to the small heli speed madness

You could stick with the Talon90 for now, but you'll grow out of it quickly. It does not provide telemetry, and in the speed world we live and die with telemetry. Also it's a little heavier than the other choices. And the 90 supports only 6 cells. You might want to get your feet wet with the Talon 90, but when you choose a motor, you probably want to chose one that'll support you for a while. My personal choice is the KDE XF500 925 it's a monster power house and can fly pretty much me up to even 9 cells with right gearing.

What are your intentions? Do you want to have fun for yourself, or you want to compete? Do you want to go 6, 7, 8 or maybe 9 cells? How much money you want to spend? There's a wide variety of options from HW to different Castle, Kontronik, Jeti etc. controllers that would work well. Motor wise other than Scorpion there are also choices with KDE, XNova and some more. It really depends on what you want.

Thanks Tomy! I am excited to get started with speed. I am looking to have fun, but also compete in local/regional speed competitions. I am really open to any motor and speed controller. The KDE motor that you mentioned looks perfect. I might as well update my ESC also. I would like to stick with Castle, since that is what I have the most experience with. Would an Edge 120 be best?

Thanks again for the help!

Brent

Castle is quite popular of course and edge gives you live telemetry cheap. Depending on the cell count, you can get away with 75A as well. For 6 cell I think I'd use something around 100A, 120 should definitely be enough.

What would you recommend for 7s?

YGE200 and Scorp 4540. You may need to a little bit of weight to the tail. Lol!

Yeah, you would probably need to stretch it.
