I have had a VBar on my 500 now for a few weeks and am loving it.
So much so, I got another one for my 600NP. I have modded the head similar to this conversion thread , The mechanical conversion took about 3 hours, If I was to do it again it would be all over in an hour and a half. I did the whole mod using a dremel, file, and my trusty battery drill. The only part that was not dead easy to do was drilling through the slot where the phasing pins normally are to tap it out to 4mm to take grub screw to lock the washout block down, this took a bit of steady hands and a strong vice. I got the electronics all sorted (In the beginning I was having trouble imagining where all the bits would go) and am happy that it is neat enough. For the head conversion I got a set of the newer type "F" balls for the newer style blade grips to replace the originals. I had to drill and retap the blade grip to M3.5 to suit the new balls. The original blade grip ball got placed onto the short side of the mixing arm. This has given me a good straight/vertical shot from mixing arm to blade grip. And from the side it all looks about right as well I have had to turn the collective common setting down to about 70% but this is still above the recommended minimum of 60%. The Cyclic I had to turn down to about 73%. This is giving me 13' collective and 10' cyclic pitch. I will have to wait for the weekend to arrive to try it out, but so far this has been a fairly easy conversion. Mick

I got the chance to maiden the VBar setup on Saturday afternoon.
All went well! A few clicks of trim to get it hovering straight and a few tweaks on yaw rates and it is flying pretty good. I am far from having a perfect setup but so far I am happy with the progress. Backwards flight was rock solid, I am really enjoying the tail gyro of the VBar!! It is a bit weird being able to take your fingers off the control sticks for seconds at a time but it is something I will thoroughly enjoy. The heli now flies on the proverbial rails and I am enjoying the heli in its new guise. Mick

Hi Mick,
Congrats on your V-bar upgrade, your 600 looks great with the cleaner head. I also would want to go flybarless but don't see a real need for it. Mind to share the performance difference between it and the orig. flybar head? And is the setup easy enough for someone never tried a flybarless system? regards,

I don't know if there is a real NEED for going flybarless on a Nitro either but I do like my gadgets!!! The 500 has really woken up by losing the flybar system. I think the real difference in flight is the cyclic rate is higher and easy to set up for the different flight modes (stable in Normal, nervous in Idleup), and the heli tracks extremely well. Is it an easy setup? So far I would say yes, but I am a bit of a techno geek anyway and enjoy playing with and researching bits like the VStabi. I am slowly getting my head around what does what in the software. So far both helis were extremely flyable with the original settings that I setup and only required a few clicks of trim to be pretty good, I have more tweaking todo I amsure but so far it is spot on!! The tail is rock solid!! I have never flown a more connected and solid feeling gyro as the VStabis. I have only experience with GY401's and Logictech6100 to base my opinion on. I did have the 6100 flying really well and it was flawless in its performance but the VStabi tail feels better. Mick

Mick,
Thanks a lot for sharing, i'm just so hesitant about the flybarless system is really due to the setups, and of course the cost. But i'll keep a close eye on this one cus it seems to be an ongoing trend. Congrats and enjoy your flybarless helis man. regards,

I got my first flybarless crash out of the way on Saturday.
I have a sneaking suspicion that my gyro sensor came detached in flight which sent the heli haywire, like really haywire, seriously haywire!! Hit throttle hold and hoped for the best. The heli fell from about 20 feet, causing not a lot of damage except to the case of my Logictech6100g tail servo which has now been upgraded to a BLS251. Just before it went crazy the heli was flying fantastically, could not be faulted. I have now fixed the damage and am raring to get it back in the air. Mick

Mick, sorry for the crash man, but are you sure that it's not a faulty electronic of the FBL system? Hope you can get things done and go fly again very soon. Thanks for always sharing.
regards,

Nice Heli,
Perhaps consider switching out those Align ball links on your head. I crashed due to a pop off on my flybarred 600. I'd imagine forces are greater on a flybarless. Take care. |

What were the symptoms shown when a link comes off in flight?
Would it just gives vibrations and bad tracking? Or would it send the heli all over the place? I am just wondering if that may have been a cause to the crash. There was a broken link in the aftermath. Mick
