Default BEST tail servo for 450 sized heli

Hi all,

Hope your holidays have been peaceful and enjoyable.

I'm looking for input on tail/gyro servos for my Trex 450. I'm looking at upgrading in the direction of the JR DS3500G and was wondering if there was a servo (and or servo mod.) out there that can equal the 3500 in speed but put out more torque.

I've looked at the Futaba S9254 (which does beat the 3500 in torque and speed); however, it is some 20g heavier and I don't know if it would fit correctly on the boom or not??? I've heard that some people are using it, and mounting it with T600 servo mounts? Is this true? I'm running a 4s setup, with 350mm blades (longer boom obviously), and getting a Spartan DS760 soon.

Input on this one one would be great before I drop $100 on a servo I can't use...if that's the case.

Thanks for your help on this one.

Take a look at the specs of a Hitec HSG-5084MG and the price. Torque requirements on the heli can be reduced with a Chinese Tail Weight Mod but torque is similar with the JR and Hitec Servo.

Hi crehop,

You have the Futaba s9254 mounted on your Trex 450se V2?!?!?!!!
How'd ya do it?
Got some pics?
What is your balance/CG like?
Do you notice the extra 20g of weight?
What servo did you move from, and how much performance difference have you noticed?

I'd love to hear what you have to say!

I've had no problems with my Futaba 9650, but I don't do 3d, just sport flying.

I second the Ino-Lab HG-D261HB. Its the price of a 9257, and a little better than a JR DS-3500G. Runs at 6 volts too.

I put a 9254 on my friends Trex450sa without any problems. What do you mean how'd ya do it? I used the stock mounts from a v2...had an extra. The Balance was fine and it flies great!

It seem like bought Trex 450SE V2 and CopterX 450 SE V2 have servo mountings with extra holes to fit standar size servos.
I just bolt my 9254 right on.

I am very happy with the Hyperion HP-DS09GMD, it holds rock solid with the Spartan gyro. It is a tiny little servo as well, which is important to save weight on a a small heli like the 250. It is MG too!

I tried it on recommendation from my LHS shop, who said all the guys in Taiwan are flying with it. He also says the Align stock gyro is pretty junk, and wouldn't risk it on his model...

I love the Spartan DS760, but can't wait to try the new Futaba gyro coming in Jan-Feb!

Hi all,

I've sent and email off to Spartan-rc just to double-check that the Ino-Lab HG-D261HB is supported/works with the DS760 - because it's not on their servo list at the moment. Still waiting for their reply. If all is well, I'll get one and see how durable/reliable they are!

Does anyone have the Ino-Lab HG-D261HB + DS760 combo??? If so, please chime in and let me know if you encountered any issues setting it up, and what your settings are for it in the DS760 software (I plan to use the USB connetion to update the DS760 firmware, and set it for the servo).

Thanks for all of your input.

Hi All,

I just received a reply from Spartan with regard to the various servos and here is what they had to say:

"The Jr DS3500G and Futaba S9257 are probably your best two choices for performance and weight.

We have not tested the HiTec HSG-5084MG but being a modern digital servo I am peaty sure it will run on 1520uS/333Hz mode which is supported by the ds760.

The INO-LAB HG-D261HB seems to be the same same servo as Robbe FS61BB which we have tested. It seems a fine servo for a 450 size machine however I have seen on internet forums that some people had concerns about its life expectancy."

So, for what it's worth, there you have it.

Anyone have anything to add???

I have a 9650 and changed the gears so now I have a 9257, with the Spartan 760 the tail is solid, even in high winds.
