Default TT-39 dies abruptly when glow starter removed...

I have a caliber 30 with a TT-39. It had been flying O.K. with a "standard" muffler (not sure what brand), but I put on a MP-II. On the run-up stand, there was more power and it seemed to run well...not spitting out fuel drops as it had been doing before.

At the field, it wouldn't keep runing after the starter was removed. If I leaved the starter on, I could get it to just begin to hover, then the engine would die abruptly, even with the starter still attached. I tried settings for the main needle from 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns out without much change. I switched from OS#8 to Enya #3, no change. I put the original muffler on, same problem. All this has been done with 30% magnum heli fuel.

I took the TT-39 COMPLETELY apart, and cleaned everything. The engine actually looked pretty good. I replaced the fuel lines, cleaned the filters, and put the MP-II back on. Same problem, literally unchanged.

Any thoughts welcome!

Usually, when a glow engine runs fine with the glow heat on and quits with it off, the engine is running too rich (assuming the glow plug is OK). Also, if the fuel has sat open, it may have gone bad. Have you tried a different jug of fuel?

Thanks for the response!

I think the fuel is O.K. since I'm burning it fine in other heli's. I'll try a fresh jug, but I'm not real hopeful.

I tried a different glow plug, but maybe trying a third may help.

I think it is "rich" somehow...I'll try pinching the fuel line in idle (with the glow heat on) and see if it revs up or dies. Maybe I'll get another clue.

Thanks for your thoughts, and please share more!

You didn't happen to use RTV sealant when you replaced the muffler did you?

Ditto with RC-Bearing
Replace plug with Enya #3 or OS #8
Lean out bottom end

Default It hasn't died in awhile, but I may have lost faith...

The engine SEEMS to be running well. I've adjusted the low mix, main mix, new glow plug, cleaned all...

It just seems that I haven't "fixed" anything. I guess it will just take some time for me to "trust" the engine again...

It's just spooky when an engine dies abruptly in a stable hover with no warning.

Thanks all for suggestions!

Believe it or not, it couls have also injested something that caused it to quit, such as a bug.

Check the plug, there is probably RTV on the element or other foreign material.

If you fly you are going to crash.

Just put the Muscle pipe on mine sat using RTV & even though I tried my best not to some of the rtv got in the cylinder & it took a little cleaning out (running the starter on the engine without a plug in) to get it all out not to mention going through 2 plugs because small pieces of the rtv got way down in them.
Once cleaned all was fine but I know what you mean about being leary for a flight or 2!
