Default Blade 400 wont spin up

Hey Guys,

I have about 130 flights on my Blade with everything stock. I noticed early on there were times where the heli would not spin up properly after initializing. Instead, as I slowly fed the heli throttle, it would just kinda spin real slowly making a grinding kind of noise. Usually after giving it some time it would just work itself out and finally spin up smoothly.

Well lately it has been doing this much more, to the point that I can't get it to spool up anymore. I noticed that the ESC gets VERY hot when this happens. I've tried reinitiallizing, letting it sit for 30 sec, gunning the throttle on purpose, but nothing works.

Any ideas as to what could be the problem?

Pull the main shaft out and remove the main gear and check the one-way bearing.

The bearing seems to be doing its job just fine once it spins up. It will transfer power all day long. Also everything spins smoothly by hand. Unless the one way bearings have some weird failure mode, I don't think it is that. It seems like the problem is electronic.

The grinding noise is coming from the fact that the motor is pulsing ( just barely spinning), and the pulsing makes the lash in the gears give off that bit of a grinding noise. Grinding may be the wrong word to use, but that is what it sounds like (even though nothing is actually grinding, just the motor pulsing). During this time time that it is hung up, the main blades are spinning at about a quarter turn to half a turn per second. If I leave the throttle setting set, the everything will stop after about 5 sec. and wont respond again until I throttle down completely for a few seconds.

At first I thought this was a problem with throttle trim, but that is set at 0. Will rembinding fix something like this?

i didnt see any mention on how tight you`re running the belt, this could cause what you`re describeing as well.

Does the motor sound like it's turning the proper speed? I just ran into the same type of problem and the pinion was loose on the motor shaft.

Belt tension is fine...

The motor is not turning the proper speed, it just kinda turns real slow and sputtery, leading to the grindy sound.

I just flew 4 flights about half an hour ago. On one of these it hung up on spool up for a couple of seconds, but then spun up fine. She flew pretty as you please for the other three flights... I'm stumped. The reason I think it is electronic is because the ESC gets so hot so quickly when it is just sputtering. I have a feeling that if I kept pushing it when it is hung up that it would burst into flames.

I was hoping someone would say it is just a matter of rebinding, or something simple like that. Everything mechanical on the heli seems fine at the moment.

change your ESC if everything else is OK it sure sounds like an ESC... get an up grade an align 35amp is good and if its not that you have a good upgrade not that expensive and programmable

Pull the motor and see if it spins up and make sure the bearings are in good shape. If it isn't that, make sure you check it with a couple of batteries not just one. Most likely your motor has failed and locked up. Check it with the pinion gear on and see if you can spin it freely by hand. Bad bearing will cause the armature to touch the magnets and lock up the motor. Very common problem with the Blade 400 stock motors. If you haven't cooked the ESC by now ?? Good luck

Yes he may have cooked his. Fried !! Hot is not good. But I would check that motor and make sure it spins freely.

I just had to replace the esc in my 400 cause it would start to spin up, then shut down. I wanted to get a CC Phoenix ICE 50 but couldn't afford it so I bought the 30 amp (35 burst) eFlite ESC for $42. It seems to be working great! It's actually programmable if you want. But, it works fine out of the box. The only problem I had was I had to reverse the red and black wires from the ESC to the motor. The motor runs backwards if you don't.

Good luck,
Brad

Be careful my esc was making the same kind of noise before it burst into flames. Check the two cylinder things in between the wires that go to the battery(can never remember what they are called). See if there is a broken connection on them.

Thanks for the ideas guys. The motor turns fine, and like I said, flies fine if it actually spools up.

Is the Align 35amp the preferred replacement ESC? Are there any other good ones to consider?

DEfifinately check the motor, At about 130+ is when mine seized. You don't want it to totally lockup in flight.

Plus if the motor is just starting to go you may be pulling more power than the esc can handle, you might catch on fire.

Go with a Turnigy Sentry 40 AMP ESC with built in balance plug. Works great. !! I love it and it fits in the frame perfectly. Added to a STOCK Blade 400 new motor, My bird Rocks. Since the upgrade everything now runs cool, Batteries just get warm now. Plus I run lights too.

Default Resolved!

Just wanted to post an update.

I resolved the issue. The culprit was......the ESC. I was able to get some help from my LHS, in troubleshooting (Greenfield News and Hobby, easily one of the best!) . One of the Blade 400 experts there guessed a bad winding in the motor (leading to high draw, and heat in the ESC), but we plugged in a new motor to my heli just to make sure and test the hypothesis. However the new motor did the exact same thing, unable to spin up. It just chunked along like my stocker. Welp, problem solved.

So I got the 45 dollar E-Flight 30 amp (35 burst) ESC just because it was the only available ESC for the right price. All I did was program it into Heli mode and she spun up and flew just fine. I was worried about it not having a heat sink like the stocker, but the new ESC only gets slightly warm. Probably because of its higher amp rating. Flew 3 packs through it just now without any problem.
