Where to buy denatured alcohol

Hi,

Where can I buy denatured alcohol? I read it is the best product to clean nitro residue, but I can't seem to find it anywhere here. I am in Canada, so if anyone know where to buy this stuff in Canada, please let me know!

Do your bank accounts a favor and Google denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and rubbing alcohol.

While I am certain the chemists, scientists and engineers will have differing opinions, these alcohols are basically the same thing. In laymans terms they have had the alcohol altered in different ways so it is toxic to drink. Thus avoiding taxes like we have for alcohol fit for human consumption.

The cheapest I have found is the 91% isopropyl alcohol at Walmart. Several dollars a gallon cheaper than a gallon of denatured from the paint store or Home Depot.

Which is better for cleaning - isopropyl or denatured alcohol? I picked up some isopropyl for Walmart last time because it was cheaper. I also watered it downed a little with water. Is that ok?

I have been using the 70% iso alcohol from walmart since april with no issues. Cheap stuff, and it works well. Pick up a small spray bottle too.

From what I have learned from the live steam groups, Denatured Alcohol is know as Meytholated Spirits in other parts of the world. In England, it appears to be dyed blue as a matter of course.

For whatever reason, I cannot post the correct link to the thread.

I have used it to clean my helicopters occasionally (and it works extremely well) but, after using it for stationary steam engine fuel, I am not all that interested in cleaning my helicopters with it.

It burns with a very intense, very hot, clear flame.

The choice is yours as to which one is better. For dousing down my heli I think cheaper is better. That is why I use the Walmart isopropyl stuff. I mix the Walmart 91% isopropyl 50% - 50% with water. To clean the hard to get at parts of the engine I just spray in on until it runs off and then let the rest evaporate.

Yes, alcohol burns very hot and willingly. I do not intend to throw lit matches at my freshly sprayed heli though so I do not pay much attention to the chance of fire while cleaning the heli.

The stuff you want to get is ethanol mixed with methanol. This will cut through virtually any kind of fuel, included gummed deposits by just spraying it on. Isopropyl achohol works just as well for a dirty engine if you use it frequently.
