I'm gonna go electric. Once you commit to electric the battery costs arent so bad and you really get used to having a clean heli after each flight. Besides, no need to buy a starter, pump,glow driver, fuel, extra glow plugs for when you foul a plug, no need to tune an engine. Not to start a debate, but there are things you simply dont have to buy when going electric. I do however plan to buy a second charger and possibly a generator which I'll end up using for more than when I go to the field.

I like the thought process here. In general it sounds like electric can be more cost efficient and cleaner!

Any last minute thoughts for the best blades or batteries? I'm thinking tomorrow may be a great day to pick these up with the sales going on.

This time of year money is tight, not only because of the holidays but mine and my wifes car tags are due along with the car insurance and a few other bills that we pay annually. I'm gonna wait until this thing actually comes out first before I start buying stuff.

From the sheer looks of how big that motor is, I dont think it will fit for you, but I may be totally wrong. We are spinning around 2200 on the head with great results, I don't see a necessity for more headspeed.

I tried a Nitro a few years ago when I got into Helis and the extra hassle of tuning the motor along with everything else I needed to learn was a hassle. Hung the Venture up, and tried again when the Blade CP came out. Learned more, moved my way up in size with E-Helis. My favorite bird now is an 8S TREX600. I did buy a Vibe 50 this summer. Again I had hassles with the motor, but eventually got it going good.

Both have their Pros and Cons. The best thing about Nitro is not waiting for charging and consistent power. However the Lipos are finally getting reasonable and the quality is much better. Electric is hard to beat when it comes to instantaneous power and it's generally more reliable.

So my vote right now is BOTH! LOL. But the future is electric I'm convinced of that.

Hi Jason, have you found the CC ESC to be reliable flying hard 3D, im trying to decide between the Castle Creations 110 or 140, Jive 80 with a heat sink or a Jive120, i have read quite a few software faults with the jive120, but also Castle ESC burning up, i would like to go the highest rated to have room for future larger motors,and most reliable/best quality ESC i can find. Any info is appriciated.
Cheers Col

P.S reliability is the most important feature to me.

I have put around 50 flights on my E Aurora since I have had it built a week before Ircha, the esc has been flawless. Using the 110HV

I've been collecting parts for the last month now - and am nearly finished. Here's what my final parts selection has been:

* 3 Align 610 servos for collective [$41/ea on sale at GrandRc]
* 1 Futaba Gy520 Gyro [$129 on sale at Tower Hobbies]
* 1 Futaba USB setup connector [$45 at Tower Hobbies]
* 1 Futaba BLS251 tail servo [$90 at Tower Hobbies after $60 discount]
* 1 CC Phoenix HV 110 ESC [$230 at Tower Hobbies]
* 1 CC programming kit [$21 at Tower Hobbies]
* 1 Spektrum AR7100 receiver [$135 at ReadyHeli]
* 1 Radix 710 Main Blades [$125 at ReadyHeli]
* 2 Turnigy 5000mah 6s 30c lipo [$99/ea at HobbyKing]

Total so far has been $997. I have yet to pick up the Scorpion motor.

Any thoughts for what other parts I'll need - or any possible problems with those selected (I can always put stuff in another one of my helis). I figured working out a good list of what's needed and the cost might be helpful for others too.

As I am waiting for the heli I am about to buy some electronic and I wonder if I have chosen the right tail servo which is BLS254 rather than 251 model and the gyro is Qurak(alu case). any comments or any better choise?

Thanks
Mo

I think your choice will work great. The only real difference between the 251 and the 254 is the frame-rate. The 251 is made specifically for the Futaba 611 or 520 gyros. The 254 will work on other manufacturer's gyros. If you have the 611/520 the 251 has a faster framerate, which should theoretically equate to slightly better performance - and the gold case acts as a heat-sink to help cool-down the now more active servo. Some Spartan gyros support the Futaba rate as well - but I'm not sure if the Quark is one of them.

The 251 also weighs a little more because of the metal case - which can help or hurt depending on your CG needs. I have the JR8900G on my trex500 - and it is a good servo too. I think I like the BLS251 more, however - although I have not had them installed on the same heli for a "direct" comparison. The JR gets HOT after running. My favorite setup has been my Futaba 611 setup on my Trex600 - but I'm hoping the 520 gives me similar performance. I have a 520 now, but it's on my Gaui200 - which I just can't compare to my 600.

I've got a good chunk of the electronics ready. Just waiting for the kits to be available. I've decided on:

Scorpion 4035-500
AR 7100
JR DS8917HV (Just released)
JR 370 Gyro
JR 8900G Tail servo
Radix 710SB (Cos. flaws)
KBDD tail blades
KBDD paddles

I'll probably do mostly what scm6079 is doing but with a few changes

* 3 JR 8717 servos for collective
* 1 Futaba GY520 Gyro
* 1 Futaba USB setup connector
* 1 Futaba BLS251 tail servo
* 1 CC Phoenix HV 110 ESC or maybe the new HV 140
* 1 Spektrum AR7100 receiver w/ a second satellite
* 1 Radix 710 Main Blades or maybe just the Align blades
* Motor will be a Scorpion for sure but don't know which one yet

I have also really loved my GY611 but I got the GY520 on sale and hope it does as well.

I received a notice from Hobby City a few days ago that they now have 35C 6S 5000mAh batteries in stock for the same price as the older 30C batteries ($99). You really can't beat the price of Zippies.

Smile Aurora E-upgraded auto bearing/tube drive?

Hello Jason,

Can you tell me if Avant has changed the auto hub one way bearing design? With all the trouble nitro owners had(including me) with slipping.

Also I heard that the tube drive aluminum shaft is stronger, I had problems with mine whipping, causing problems.

This electric looks good...just need to see a flybarless version!

Thanks,
Brian

Hey Brian,

The sprag is the same as the nitro one, with the electric (6.25 horsepower) we have not had any issues with the one way bearing.

Correct the newest torque tuber is stronger, much stiffer than the previous version and very sturdy. Everything is working excellent both on the Electric and on the Nitros.

Jason
