Default Can't bring myself to do it - fear factor extreme

I've been flying for a pretty long time now - and do well at the basics like hovering all orientations, fast forward flight, sport flight, stalls, piros, backwards flight, precision hovering, etc. But I can't bring myself to actually do 3d back flips. I do them in the sim again and again - and they look great. I made the sim as much like my real heli as I could - and practiced every step.

I go to the field, and I can't do it. I go in to the move right and at the last possible second bail out and bring it back home tail first - defeated. I've tried several times where I told myself "this is the day" - and it could have been - but I always made excuses to push it off until later in the day - and then (if) I get up to do it - always chicken out.

Am I alone in this - or has anyone else gone through this? I'm scared of smashing the helis I have that are my favorite and fly great - and I'm scared of crashing my other helis because they don't fly great - and may cause the failure themselves (plus I have less stick time on those). I'm scared I don't know the right amount of altitude and area to leave myself if it all goes wrong.

Ideas? Stones to throw? Success stories of your own?

this is just wallet talking to your brain lol

would i be learey learning 3d with a 500 or 600 probably so. I learned on a 450 and i didnt care about wrecking it at all so i was flipping front and back after 3 months.

If you quit careing if you wreck you will lose the fear and it will pull off smooth.

when i started doing this and it did help and you have heard it. fly with altitude 3 mistakes high and just do it.

well on the sim try to mess up on purpose and see if you can get yourself out of the weird orientation and just practice on that. my first time was with $2000 invested into my heli and man i was shaking after the first time i flipped her and then i just did it again and again and also rolled her over man it was a blast. you should have seen me after the first flight i was all smiles.

just do it one day you wont regret it trust me. if you can do it on the sim you can do it in real life..

just remember fly at least 2 mistakes high and in idle up

You'll hear it a dozen times, but take it up high and go for it. The most likely outcome will be that it drops several feet the first time you do it. Real helicopters don't flip like in the sim, the timing is a bit different. The beauty is after a few flips, you'll get the timing and be okay. One thing I discovered was i was inducing rudder inputs sometimes when flipping, which makes for an awesome save if you can save the resulting mess. I tightened my left stick way up, so now my flips are clean.

Just go for it. The very worst that can happen is you will crash.

rolls, back flips, forward flips... all VERY easy if you can fly upright and do circuits and loops... just do it.

I went through that this summer with my precious 600, even though I had done them months before with my 450. Flight nerves and fear of costly repairs! Back flips are the most natural for me, so I did them first. Even today in the sim my backflips are still smoother than front flips, from any orientation. Weird, eh?

I had several days where I was on my way to the field thinking this is the day, only to talk myself out of it, thinking something like, 'Geez, this wind. I sure feel like I'm working hard just to hover...WTF I'm scared....well not today.'

One day I'm driving to the field and I though to myself, 'Today, don't give yourself time to talk yourself out of it.' So I didn't, I just took off, got about 40 feet up and did a backflip. It was so ugly! I used way too much negative collective and was all over place. But I kept doing them and by the third one it looked ok. It was a little harder to keep the tail straight than in the sim, but the flight nerves were the toughest to overcome.

Another thing that helped was to have someone else do some 3D with my heli. It got me over the psychological hump that 'What if something is wrong with my setup?' Silly, but it helped.

Oh, and btw, backward flight is way harder the doing flips...

I like doing backflips with the helicopter side on to me. Just like the way it looks...

+1! Backwards is way harder. I've been afraid to take backward circuits out of the sim for weeks. I just got an MSR which is helping me get some flight experience so I'll be doing them with my 600 soon.

Hey Scott, you're normal, except for the backwards flying part, that's hard on the brain..

Buddy box if you can, that way you can go for it with a safety net if you get in trouble.

First time I flipped, rolled. nose in and hovered inverted on my 600, I was buddy boxed with local talent Kenny McDonald at the Brooks fun fly.

All he said was "try anything you want, just do it with enough altitude for me to realize you're in trouble and have time to save your bird"

I've never felt more relaxed flying

Mel

If your doing loops then you can do flips, Start at a good hight and fff into the first loop, nice and big and round then, on the exit go into the next loop making it smaller, and so on till your looping on the spot, then your doing a flip, next go from the hover a little forward push then up and over, then the next step is from the hover just up and over,
use the same for forward flips but start higher as you'll be doing the outside loop.

Paul.

Default Finally did it...

Well, I finally went out and did a backflip today! The first one was sloppy and I lost lots of altitude, the second was worse and I thought I was going to lose it - but the third and fourth were much improved.

I started from a hover at around 30-40 ft. I lost 3-5 ft of altitude on each except the 2nd where I ended up mighty close to the ground. I think my nerves got the better of me on that one and I kept a little negative pitch after bringing it around and scrubbed the altitude really fast. After finally doing a few for real I think I'll practice a bunch more on the sim for the parts that didn't go so well.

No crashes - nothing broken and one heck of an adrenaline rush!

Once I did my first one I was shocked at how easy it was. It felt like it went up, i blinked and it was over. They will become super easy in the next couple flights!

I flew 3 tanks today and did some tailslides but didn't work up the nerve to take on into a backwards circuit. I've really gotten them smooth on the sim so there's no excuse for me to just do one. In your honor I will force myself and report back once I've accomplished my mission.

Yup - you called it about perfect. Including a bit of the rudder input. Thanks for helping to push me over to actually trying it. Next time I'll know a lot more what to expect.

Since I had mastered my flips on my 450, it seems that everything that I fly, I have the sudden urge to filp it into an inverted hover. Recently indoor flying started up, and I didn't konw how well I would take to it, since I can do more then just hover this year. The first few flips were intimidating knowing I didnt have unlimited room to punch out. The nerves settled down and now has become easy again. Last year I was the guy watching while better pilots flew, now I am the one being watched (which makes me nervous, I don't like to be the center of attention).

Yeah , I was suprised at how slow and controlled the heli can be while flipping. The practice on the sim made my first ones almost too easy
