Default IT FLIES!!! It really flies.

Let's get the "thank you" stuff out of the way.

Big thanks to Bob for his videos - - Bob the only guy I can say I almost know personally that goes by one name.

Big thanks to Larry who is a Heli Freak that lives near me - - He came over my place yesterday when I thought I was done building and found most of the issues with my build. I was up till 4am fixing all the stuff he found! Then he took me out to a local club today for my heli's first flight. We burned through 1/2 a pack with him at the controls working out the remaining bugs. I picked up the controls then.

Big thanks to all of the rest of you that have taken time to give me advice - - You're a super bunch!

OK, like I said above, with the help of my new friend Larry I finished the build yesterday and flew my 500 today. Researching the build and all the parts to buy has been fun. Flying the sim has been fun. Building the heli has been fun. But actually flying the thing for the first time was Freakin' fantastic

I'll take some time another day to post my thoughts on the build. But for now I'll simply say that the months of sim time really paid off. When Larry handed me the controls, I was up off the ground and hovering after two hops.

I'll quit while I'm ahead and post some pictures.

Thanks again everybody for all the help

Bill

Ken, you're one of the folks that gets a big thank you. You and Deet showed me just how precise a head setup could be/should be. Once I got through the head a second time the swash interaction was almost completely gone. Didn't have to tweak end points at all. Blade tracking was spot on without need for adjustment. We needed a few clicks of trim to settle things out but when the wind calmed, the heli would hover, hands off, for a few seconds and that was on the first battery pack ever flown in that heli !!!

Anyway, I currently own two batteries. Both are Hyperion. One is a VXg3 2600mAh pack and the other is a CX G3 2500 mAh pack. The one in the picture is, I think, the VX which is the physically smaller (but larger capacity) of the two. I don't have enough experience or data to tell you much more other than the two are nearly identical in size and weight. Right now I'm just going go keep buying a variety of different batteries until I can form an opinion on what I like.

Based on everything I've read and my limited personal experience I'm moving up to the 3000mAh range for future purchases. As you can see, the packs are hanging off the nose just to keep the CG close to correct.

Hi Bill,

I have to say it again - you did a great job today on your first hovers. You didnt scare me even once!

Seriously, that was by far the best first hovering job Ive ever seen. Your sym time really paid off and it shows!

At this rate, you'll be doing tick-tocks and tail slides before you know it

You also did a great job building your first heli. There were some minor issues, but again, most guys Ive checked out did far worse than you did for sure!

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!

Larry

Congratulations, great build and really happy for you with the first flight.

One little thing though... have you pinned the tail?

You might want to do that.

But for now, Congrates again

Waelwell, I know the feeling. Glad to see your are using Anderson PP for your connectors. One thing to check is to make sure your Type T arm in your tail is firmly attached to the slide sleeve/bushing. If not, the tail blade rotation will undo it and you will have no rudder control.

Larry - You Da MAN!!!

Deet - you caught me. No I haven't pinned the tail. But then you could see that from the pics. It's on my list.

Vanguy - I LOVE the PowerPoles. Just love them. I'll look into your tail suggestion. If it's what I think you're talking about I tried to undo it during construction to put some Loctite on it but couldn't unthread it.

Thanks,

Bill

Yup, that is what I'm talking about and if it's tight then you are OK. I also put on some cheap tail blades because the Align CF costs $17 to replace.

You know, I never though about the tail blades. I put the Align main blades away and put on a cheaper set. But I never thought about the tail blades. I do have an cheaper set in the spares kit. I'll swap them out. Collected up some grass stains on the good blades already

I noticed you mentioned INTERACTION. Mine has a small bit of interaction!!! What is the secret? I tried my best, calipers and all but can't resolve the prob. What do the wise ones say?

Holy crap man! Is that a car batt strapped on the front!

It's a great feeling when all your hard work comes together and you see great results.

Have fun!

Yeah, it threw me off too. I think it's just because he has the battery mounted on it's side. All the 6S 500s I've seen in person mount the battery with the wide side laying flat.

Oh thanks a lot guys! Now I feel like I just came out of the bathroom and I've got toilet paper stuck to my shoe.... ... but nobody told me! Just figured you'd let me walk around like that for a while???

I can just imagine the PM's now:

Tisondm: "Hey Ken, check out Bill's heli, he's got the battery mounted sideways "
Ken: "ROTFLMAO!!! Man, we should really tell him about that."
Tisondm: "No way! Let's see how many folks make fun of it before he figures it out."

OK, I'll remember you guys at Christmas time

lol, you can mount the battery any way you want. If the canopy fits and the CG is right, who cares.

I just never explained why I asked what size pack you were using in my first post. It was because it looked huge! I didn't realize at the time that it was on its side.

Careful that none of that braid has tension that is pulling on connectors.. I had one pull out mid-flight since the vibes + spring like tension yank it out.

Ya waelwell I have the same battery, and I have mine the other way like Ken said, it has to be close to hitting the canopy if not hitting it… You might find it better to mount it the other way (might give you a little bit more room to play around with your battery pack location) but at any rate I also have the Hyperion 2950mAh and it is like a perfect fit and helps balance out the heli much better than the 2600mAh, also the 3300mAh should also work, almost the same size as the 2950mAh…. (But starts adding on the weight!)
