I just put together a trex 450xl kit. I watched bob's videos beforehand, and followed the pictures precisely and in order. But...

The main rotor grips move about 1/8". Almost as though the feathering shaft is too long. Is this normal or should I put some shims in there? Where should they go?

I've had this happen. It's been a while, but I think I had reversed the 2 bearings inside the blade grip on one side. The inside diameter of the bearings is slightly different and things won't tighten up properly if they are swapped.

I watched Bob's video again, this time with the model in front of me and the manual in my hand. Same result.

Align put the bearings in (the big ones, I put the little ones in).

I'm sure this isn't normal, right?

Have you got the little aluminum spacers that go between the dampers and the grip bearing fitted ? They are about 2mm thick.

The spacers are in. It was built after watching Bob's vid, and rebuilt while watching. With the manual in hand.

When I pull on the grips they move enough to see the spacers between the dampers and the small bearing.

The screws on the ends are as tight as they will go (with the washers in place).

Like I said before, it seems like the feathering shaft is too long. I know thats not the case, but something is amiss.

Any suggestions? Like maybe a shim between the 2 bigger bearings?

It's not moving enough to be missing a bearing, but I pulled it apart again and made sure they were all there.

I'm at a loss.

From the headblock going out you should have - 2 of dampener rubbers, 3x5x1.5mm aliminium collar, MR63ZZ bearing, blade grip, 2 of 693ZZ bearings, 2x5x0.4mm washer, 2x5mm socket screw. You should have the same both sides of the head so it is 4 dampeners all together. These are the parts for the stock XL head.

I have become very familiar with all the parts. They are all there.

I would even go as far as saying I put them together correctly (and I have done it numerous times).

IDK. Is anyone on here near the Myrtle Beach area I could bring it to? I'll try the LHS, but that's no guarantee.

Maybe I'll PM Finless.

I had that issue my first time. Had the bearing races all mixed up. Or, maybe you do have a long shaft

@Battle,

Check the spacers again, are they in backwards? Usually they are stepped and the flange side goes towards the head block/dampeners. If you have them reversed they might be pressing on the dampeners thus causing loose grips.

Hope this helps figure it out.

The old XL kits had this problem. They were supplied with narrow grip spacers. Later Align came out with wider spacers to solve this. You can still fly with the narrow spacers OK but dampening will be soft. You need to go get the wider spacers used on the SE.

That's great news.(That I can fly it). I'm not ready for real stiff dampening yet, I just didn't want the blades/grips to fly off.

Bob, thanks for all your help. Those videos are a great tool. You helped me tremendously and don't know me from the next guy.
