Default Hyperion LBA-10 or FP V-Balancer?

I am about to purchase a new balancer. Which one do you think is better to be used with an Astro 109?

I would go with the V-Balance Module. They are working great with the 109's.

Another vote for the V Balancer, it can shut off the Astro 109 if cells go over-voltage making it a very safe setup for fast charging as well, for charges on the field I charge my FP 4900 packs at 8A, at this level it takes around 30 minutes to fully charge a pack.

The LBA10Net also does those things, but you'd probably have to make your own adapters for FP/TP 6S packs. So far, I haven't found anybody that makes one for sale. The V-Balancer would be an off the shelf solution, so that may be better.

One advantage of the LBA10 is its ability to be ganged up so that you can charge 12S as a single unit. You'll just have to make your own adapter to go with the TP/FP balance plug. LBA10 will also shut off your charger if one cell gets above 4.2V, thereby making it idiot proof.

Hi all,

I'm in the same quandry; lba10 or v balance. will the either 'trip' off when the astro109 goes into it's final mode of charging, pulsing the voltage?

Cheers,
Leslie

It doesn't trip unless you've got massive imbalance. I've rigged mine so I can charge my 3S x 2 packs simultaneously as 6S. The only time it trips is with my mixed packs (PQ 3700 and Maxamps 4000), and I know I have a bad cell on the PQ. When it trips like that, I just lower the charge rate, and the ballancer has enough time to compensate for the imbalance.

I just got a reply from Bishop Power Products, and they'll make a custom adapter for the LBA10 for $8.95.

I have both - my V-Balance works really well and my Hyperion LBA10 6S doesn't kick start my 109 charger - so I'd go with the VB

What do you mean, "doesn't kick start my 109 charger"? Do you mean it doesn't stop the charge?

No it doesn't start it - Astro 109 waits for battery then when you push LBA10 into charge/balance mode .... nothing happens - whereas the V Balance starts the charger. It may well be a faulty unit (I have read it works OK with 109) but it is only 2 months old.

DOH returned with barbs on - as I said when you change from discharge to charge mode by "push the mode again" it doesn't kick the charger into life no matter how many times or how long you push the button

Yep, you've got a bad one. As soon as I push the button on mine to put it in charge mode, my 109 kicks on.

can someone confirm if the 2 lba10's can be networked to charge a 10S or 12S battery or if they will just charge 2 6S batteries together. I have seen all the literature and no where have I seen it say it will charge a 10S or 12S battery. All it says is that it will charge 2 of the same type batteries together essentially letting you charge two batteries on one charger. This and the hyperion charger look like a very good opportunity if they work.

Also, what is max amp rate? Can the LBA10 handle 10 amps going through it if I decide I want to charge a 5000mah pack at 2C?
