Ok, here's my newbie review on the JGF 500TH. First my set up:
JGF 500TH 12T CC 35A esc 95% flat throttle curve no governor DN Power 2150mah 15C lipo STK Superframe V3 with align all metal head, Trueblood dampers, Tech-mp 325 wood blades less relevent parts: MicroHeli all meta tail HS-65MG cyclic, GY401/HS65 tail I did not need to shave or modify my STK frame to mount the motor, but I did have to undo the screws in the front to allow the motor in. It is wider than all the openings on the frame. Once it is in, there no fitment issues. Here are some pics of the motor and some comparison shots next to a 430L. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I used the exact same throttle curve as my 430L and the same pinion, blade etc etc for the JGF 500TH. The only thing I changed was the motor. Upon spool up, the motor seems to be quieter than my 4 months old 430L. As soon as it spooled up, I punched it. The climb felt just a bit quicker than the 430L, and it doesn't bog as much after a 5 seconds of climbing at full pitch (11 degree) if at all. Going through my usual routines of figure 8's and stick banging stall turns, the motor felt very smooth. It doesn't bog as much when I do stupid sharp 180 degree turns that normall would bog the Align motor to the point of the tail wagging trying to keep up. It felt like I can be more careless about not bogging it. Because even when I bog it down, the power returns right away. Just for comparison, I did try out high governor mode and I could not tell any difference. Toward the end of the pack, I can feel the power is reduced, but not as much as the 430. Climb is still Pretty consistent throughout. If you're expecting to turn your 450 into a JATO heli, you won't find it. But it does have great power and stays mostly consistent throughout the whole flight. After running through 4 packs at 6 min each, the motor felt almost ambient. The esc is just warm, and my lipo packs are quite a bit cooler than when it was on the 430. I'm really impressed by how cool the motor stayed after 4 consecutive packs. The 430 would get quite hot after 4 consecutive flights. Perhaps I can get more pop out of this motor if I have carbon blades and running 3k+ rpm. But this IS a newbie review, so no carbons here. Feel free to ask me any questions you guys might have about this, I will do my best to answer it. I will continue to update this thread as I put more stick time on this motor. |

Looks like my pitch was a bit off, I was only at 9 degree pitch yesterday. I brought it up to 11+ today and the climb rate got quite a bit faster. The temperature of the pack of course rose a bit after the flight. But it is still cooler than when I had the 430 at 9 degree pitch. Motor is slightly warmer and the esc is the same.

15c batts seems low. I read the 500 needs more amps.
BTW, how do you like that scale? I see it on ebay for $5 (+$12 shipping). |

hikscub: The amp draw of the 500TH is actually lower than that of an Align 3550 430L motor with the same pinion. My Eagle Tree says 22.8A for the JGF 500TH vs. 23.1A for the 430L on 11 teeth with 325 Pro Wood blades during punchout (10 degrees positive pitch, around 2400RPM in the cold).
I would take that with a grain of salt, however, as it's been several weeks since I measured my old 430L and the weather has gotten cooler, which almost certainly accounts for the amp difference. Regardless, the JGF 500TH is a very comparable motor to the Align 430L for amp draw, but it has a LOT more torque. 15C batteries on 11 teeth with 325 Pro Wood blades work just fine.

I'm using Castle Creation Phoenix 35A esc as stated in my review. The battery I'm using is DN Power 15C as stated in the review as well. The JGF 500TH has plenty of power on the 15C battery. My original motor 430 is also using the same battery, so it's a good comparison. The motor is considerably cooler than the 430, and judging by the lower temperature of the battery after the flight, it draws less amperage with everything else being the same.
hikscub, the scale is ok, it is off by .1g sometimes. Sometimes it shows 10.1 sometimes 10.0 It uses coin battery, which is a pain to buy, so find something that use AAA. |

rcboosted: Ok, thanks, I'll look for something else. But, the price is nice
On the batts I'm sure that a 15c is ok, especially with 11t. I imagine going to a 14t on the 500th would require something more than 15c. I was flying a 450th on 13t and it was actually pretty tough on the Prolites and I wasn't super happy with the hs or power. I'm now using a Medusa 28-40-2500 on 4s, 11t. 9 min flight times with massive power. But, Medusas are nice but expensive and heavy. The 500SH looks like it will be great on 4s. |
