Default 520s or 550s for 3D Flying?

Hey Folks,

What blades should I use for my Trex 550 for a 3D style of flying (Flips, Loops, Tictocs, etc) . Will be using the KBDD 84.5mm for the 550s and the stock align tail blade for the 520s. Any suggestion will be much appreciated!

I love my 553 Edge blades, but this is one case where I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In other words, you can make an argument either way. For me, the heli "feels" bigger with the 550s. Autos are reportedly easier, but I haven't done any from altitude yet, so I can't say. You also don't need as much headspeed with the bigger blades, so you are a little more efficient if you are just sport flying.

Smaller blades are less expensive (at least than the Edge blades), but there are less expensive options starting to appear in the 550mm size that may change that equation.

+1 for 550's, but I think rtmoore4 is right. It's down to personal preference, there's no one right answer.

I like that little bit of extra pop and stability that the 550's seem to give.

Try them, if you like them keep them, if not you can always go back to 520's.

Well said on the above 2 posts
I absolutely love the Edge 553's. The heli really does feel a lot bigger and it is very stable, but still 3D bangin at the same time

Ok thanks to all, I think I will give the edge 553 a shot, but i know my 550 isn't comparable to the 600e pro, in terms of stability and autos. Anyway, I love both helis nontheless

I tried Edge 553 after almost a year of flying 520's and the heli feels more like the sim now (I fly a 700E on the sim so this not a big surprise actually ). It's incredible how much of a difference those 30 mm make.

553's all the way. I actually have my 550 stretched w/600 boom and I love the way the heli flies. I don't think you can go wrong with the heli being stretched with 553's.

donahue, is your 550E running a 6s pack or a 12s pack?. did you make any other changes when you stretch your 550E with the 600 tail boom?

6s 5000 pack 40c Zippy and it flies really well, get the EDGE 553's and you will love your heli even more. Have fun

I believe the chord of the EDGE blades may be slightly wider too, which helps for auto's. They are a little more money though. Honestly, I think you will be happy with either or.

Still love the Align 520's. Flips and rolls quick. May try the 553 some day.

Just used 550's for the 1st time yesterday. I think I may like the 550's over the 520's. It might be my imagination, but it seemed to float a little smoother, and respond better to + and - pitch moves. I will be upgrading to the 700 main gear though, because one hard transition from + to - pitch stripped my main gear out completely. Got lucky and brought her back in without incident.

Ok, I just got the Align 550mm blades on my 550. First feeling of the 550 was that it feels large and "floaty" in the air. but i noticed that the tail is vibrating slowly a little bit. Is there any cause for this? btw, i am using the 84.5 kbdd tail blades

If your using the 550mm blades do you need to get smaller tail blades? Just wondering if the blades may clip them in hard manoeuvres?

I'm tempted but was unsure on this issue.

550 blades requires 86mm tail blades. 92mm will hit.

I prefer the 550 blades for 3D and aerobatic autos. There is a big difference in auto performance. Enough to make the difference of landing or crashing more extreme autos.

Flight time suffers with 550s. Obviously you need to run a lower headspeed on 550's, but even then I ended up with 30s less. Also 550's are harder on the ESC and batteries.

All worth it to me since I auto every flight. But for the longer 3D flights with less wear and tear on the electronics/batts 520's are better.

Of course they auto. Just less hang time compared to 550's.
