Default Target Headspeed et al

So I am checking out motors for the Avant and I'm wondering what the sweetspot for headspeed is for 3D?

Also wondering what motors people are running.

And lastly, has anyone tried the Gens Ace 5300 batteries in the Aurora. They are wider than most batteries and wondering if they will fit inside the canopy. Mine is under the tree in wrapping paper so I can't check for myself

Thanks again for all the help

that battery is listed as 138.59 x 42.78 x 63.2mm (L * W * H)
http://www.xheli.com/98p-30c-5300-6s1p.html

the max battery dimensions are listed in this sticky thread at the avant forums:
http://www.avantrc.com/support/showthread.php?t=1203

looks like max is 174.43mm x 51.65mm x 60mm but it may work because you can move the left one back a bit and clear the 60mm max against the canopy.

I run the Scorpion 4035-560kv goverened to 2150 with 693 edge fbl blades running rigidcore head. Love it. Another good choice would be the 530kv

2000 gives long flight times. 2150 gives good 3D.

I like Scorpion motors but those (at least by the specs) seem a little down on power compared to even the Align 700MX series. How does the power seem in the air?

All I fly anymore is Scorpion motors, and they have incredible power.

The 4035-560 is much more powerful than the 700mx. I have flown both in same machine. The 4035-530 is also more powerful then 700mx. Thats not saying the mx is not a good motor. It is and gets longer flight times than the other 2.

My 560 has data logged peaks of 8400 watts where the mx peaks were in the 5600 range

Tom, Thanks for the information. Here is what I am thinking of doing:

I really want to put a Jive 120 with the heat sink in this Heli but the price tag is a little shocking when I combine that with a 250 dollar motor. So what I am thinking is that
I can get a 700MX that someone didn't use in their 700 for cheap money (already have a lead). Get the Jive and a 700MX for now then later a Scorpion and it might seem a little more palatable. Plus I'm seriously considering a Scorpion LE motor so this would give me a chance to wait for one and still be flying. I like the 700MX in my 700E and the weight of the Avant seems to be similar

Cant blame you on the Jive. Just put one in my avant and its awesome. That combo should work great. Those LE motors are so hard to find. Been wanting one myself.

Which Jive did you go with? I notice there is the Jive 120 and the Heli Jive 120

Tom,

How did the Heli-Jive + Heatsink fit. Did you have to mod anything?

Currently not running heatsink and plate after a hard 3d flight is 78-85 degrees. Heatsink will stick out side of frame but it lines up perfectly with cutout. I am mounting it this weekend as i have the thermal tape now so if needed i can remove it to get esc out of frames without needing to remove frame screws to spread frame to slip esc out. Not picturing much need to remove it but if you were to use arctic silver it would be very difficult to remove. Will take pic before and after mounting heatsink and post for you.

Have a great holiday!

Tom

I always use very thin thermal tape to hold the heat sinks onto mine. But then again, if a custom heat sink costs me $50, I hate to have to trash it if the ESC burns out. In Texas summers, you really need a big heat sink to keep your ESC cool (when you're running a Scorpion LE motor).

I'm running the scorpion 4525-520 LE with the castle creations Ice2 HV120 at 2150hs, but you might also want to consider the 4035-530 if you can't find the LE . I ran the 4035-500 for over a year and it ran great with longer flight times, but a little less power than the 520.

Sounds great. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
