Anyone doing it?
I have read mixed reviews about doing it, but I need some sort form of backup. I have also looked at running a LiFe 900mah buffer pack opposed to Ni-Cd; anyone done this before? I will be using a Gryphon 7075 BEC.

Buffer pack? Do you mean a separte RX pack to power the servos?

A Nicad/Nimh pack that is plugged into the Rx if the ESC or BEC gives up; at least you will still have cyclic control to auto it down.
The Nicad is charged by the BEC. This comes as standard with a Kontronic setup.

Sounds like too much going on. Eliminate the BEC and run a straight RX pack.
Much easier to deal with and if flight batteries give way, you still have complete control, less motor.
