RC Heli's are a recent addition to my long list of hobbies. I am also a D licensed skydiver with 16 years of experience, and I own my own race car and regularly do track events. Any one of the three (skydiving, racing or RC heli's) will darn near get me interrogated by onlookers.

I got a empty lot next to my house and I normally fly my mcpx there but tonight was such a nice evening I thought I would break out my t-Rex 450 so I took both my mcpx and t-Rex over to my local high school football field for a fly. The wife was jogging around the track and the kids were playing around climbing on all kinds of stuff. Anyway it cracks me up when I take the birds some where to fly and the questions I get from people.

So I start out with the mcpx I warm up with that little guy and there are a couple people jogging around the track next thing I know I look behind me and three dudes are standing there going that little thing is so cool, how much did that cost? Will that flip up side down? How fast will that go? Man I have to get me one of those? That thing is so fast?

Then I fire up the 450 and they are like holy s$&@ wow where can I pick one of those up? I tell them I built it and they are like wow did it come in a kit? I am just laughing because they have no clue how long it took me to build it. Nor do the no how long it took me took get the balls to fly it.

Anyway it just cracks me up with all the questions you get when you fly these things? I am sure all of you get the same thing? It funny they have no clue how long it took me to fly these things and how hard it is to master flying a cp helicopter. What's funny is when the mcpx and the 450 are setting together on the ground and I tell them see that little red guy he flys just like that big guy.

Anyway I am sure all of you get the same thing. It's funny when your trying to just enjoy a flight and you see cars stopping by watching these things fly. What a great hobby fun flying these guys.
Ya, I get the 20 questions thing, and laughed at when I wipe out

Almost only the question I ever get asked is

"how high can it fly"

which I completely regard as stupid.

I get asked a lot of questions when I fly too, like:
  • Why does yours fly so much slower than the other helicopters?
  • Does yours fly inverted?
  • Is that all you can do with it?
  • Who makes that thing?
  • How high will it go?
And those questions come from my flying buddies

I always start with my mCP X, then my B450 3D, then my Prôtos. Usually, they come when I fly my mCP X or my B450. I land, and tell them to stay at least 50 yards behind me, i'll show them something cool.

Then I spool up my Prôtos to 90% throttle and trust me, they stay away hehe.

Living in the country has its downsides, like the smell of fresh fertilizer in the summer, but there are some benefits. I like being able to fly, race or even go target shooting in my backyard without any interruptions.

That's nice. I fly the 450's *very* early in the morning at a local park. I don't get questions because I feel safer flying when there's no one around.

the mCP X however... I fly around in smaller parks and people generally leave me alone.

Do dogs count?

I was practising hovering and orientations one day and I had this dog... he actually just sauntered up to the mCP X - I had no clue what he wanted to do to it, I'd assumed if he wanted to attack it he'd have pounced.

No, he just walks up to it cool as cucumber... to what? Lick it?

I hadn't a clue. But I didn't wait to find out, quite annoyed as I was trying to see how low I could get to the grass...

I'm same with spykez. I fly early in the morning when hardly anyone is around. Or else go to flying field where lots of old guys fly planes and just me flying my heli which is in separate area from them

Update on a earlier post. Turns out the Align 250 and I made the paper. Thank god I was blurred out in the background flying the MCPX 2 mistakes high. The 250 was all pretty in the foreground waiting her turn. Write up says I was warming her up. Turns out the few questions the photographer asked went over his head. LOL Anyhow hope it drums up some business for the LHS.

Take a picture of the picture? Beats hauling out the scanner maybe....

I've never had anyone be antagonistic on a public field, tho I sometimes see "land grabs" where someone moves in to play frisbee or soccer and thinks it's OK to play under my SR or 450 (no). And I would never move in and do the same thing to them. They have more faith in my flying skills than I do! And on the other hand I've had kids be well behaved and thank me for "letting" them see my helicopter fly. As long as they're not trying to follow it or run underneath I'm fine.

LOL! When they ask me that one (and its like 100% of the time) I just answer and say "higher than I want it to go." That normally ends the stupid questions.

Haven't had the experience yet of folks asking while I fly (although I had a gaggle of kids once I had to warn back while I was practicing hovering my 450). However, I love the impressed comments I invariably get whenever I bring my 600 Nitro into my LHS - never fails to raise eyebrows. Usually it's something about how committed I must be to the hobby.

I know I'm gonna catch it for this, but here it goes: To the people who fly at public parks and in public areas, myself included, the park is there for everyone to enjoy. The operative word here is PUBLIC. If you are engaged in an activity that is dangerous, and most people will agree, flying helis, even an MCPX, IS dangerous, then it is your absolute responsibility, both socially and legally, to yield that area. It should never be an issue of "hey, this is dangerous and you should watch out" but more "hey, this is dangerous, and if there is the slightest chance of you being injured by my activity, then your safety is the higher priority and I will cease this activity". It is unreasonable to expect that you can stake out large areas of a public facility just because you were there first, and in fact, it is down right selfish and arrogant. You would think it ridiculous for someone to bring a hi-powered rifle to a public park and start shooting it, yet it has been shown time and again that a rc heli is capable of inflicting serious injury, and possibly even death. And trust me, if someone gets hurt, regardless of whose fault you perceive it to be, you will be held liable and accountable. For those that complain about the questions that are asked, again, if you are in a public place, you are fair game. Those questions are generally not asked out of ignorance or stupidity, but this thing you may remember from your own childhood; curiosity. What would you have people do, put their children on a leash. The reason we bring them to the park is to provide them with a place to run and play. Every park I have ever been to has equipment for children to play on. I have yet to se a landing strip or a heli pad. Children, and even adults, are naturally curious, it's how we learn. My point is this; if you want privacy, or to be left alone while you are flying, join a club, or go to the park when no one is there. Otherwise, do the right thing, and pack it up when the kids arrive. Respond politely when someone asks you a question, and be a good ambasador of this sport. I would put my heli in the dirt before I would risk an injury to anyone especially a child, and would never even consider a rude reply to a question asked out of natural curiosity.

Pretty spot on until you refereed to this activity as a sport.

I love the young kids asking questions...

Kid: Is it hard to fly?

Me: Oh yeah, look at this big scar on my wrist I had to get 5 stitches, i'm just glad it didn't catch me in the neck, it would be like getting slashed with big knife..... ( my scar is an old work injury, lol)

Kid: Your helicopter did that?

Me: Oh yes, them blades spin around at 10,000 mph and are razor sharp so it can slice through the air fast. I was chasing this cat the other day here and I accidentally cut the poor things head off... Boy, I won't ever do that again!

Now the kid is holding his neck, or is on very high alert (meanwhile you start flying like your having problems keeping control)

Kid: wheres the dead cat? (often I get this question)

Me: I seen some big birds eating on it right over there ( which happens to be exactly where you are flying, which is funny how he's not going to run over there to look while your flying there, lol.)

This Just keeps going and going, but it's funny as heck as the kid won't take his eyes of the helio or wont move until you land.

LOL. Sport, hobby, pastime, waste-of-time, waste-of-money, therapy, choose your semantics.
