What have you guys done (other than not crashing) to the canopy pins to get them to hold up better. I have carefully put shrink wrap around mine and held up pretty good. Hate to do it to the new frame I have as you have to be super careful not to heat too much or it disfigures the frame. Just wanted some other options. Thanks

Astroid Designs did do a cf brace for the pins which was apparently very good...I have been trying to get some, unfortunately without success...that aside I haven't heard of any other methods..but I'm all ears as I'm about to rebuild mine into a new frame right this minute

i just cut em off, drill a little hole at the base and insert cf rod with a little ca glue, works like a charm.

toothpicks work well, they adhere to the plastic very well.

The front ones are easy. CA a length of 1mm CF rod or music wire onto the frame parallel with the pins taking it right across above or below the 3 in 1 mounting posts. Then wrap thread around the joints with the canopy pins and add more CA.
The back ones are more complicated. You can do something similar with bent music wire attached to the frame behind the main shaft but you have to be careful not to interfere with anything else. |

I reinforced my front pins with a single 1mm CF rod CAed to the pins passing through the motor area. Actually it might be 2mm, I had more space when I switched to BL and had the room to spare. The rear ones are more complicated, but did a similar thing, cut up a piece of CF rod and used thick CA where it connects to the frame and made sure the two pieces were just long enough to touch the frame and sit behind where the canopy notches in. Then shrink wrapped all 4 canopy pin + cf rod combos.
I've managed to crash these hard enough that the tip nubs where the canopy notches in breaks off but the rest of the pin stays connected to the frame. I'm pretty happy with this mod, it's heavier than just replacing the rods entirely with CF but it's plenty sturdy. |

Here is a shot of mine. Also shows how I tie my links together. I used a 99 cent Plank pushrod to make mine. I bend mine around the front of the bearing. If you take your time it looks nice and neat. I am modding my original frame. Just waiting on some CF rod. I might post some pic's of the process in one of the stickies so it won't get lost. Wish I could do a weight comparison of before and after. But I don't have a intact stock frame to compare to. This mod is like $ in the bank.
