Default The Wing-ed Things..... a build log

Hi Guys

Finally got the shop in order enough to get somewhere.... of course, I have a new sander coming so I have it torn up AGAIN; But... I'm still managing to make some progress anyway. Way too many projects!!! Thanks for all the input guys!

Bring on the DragonWings!

Just a little history.... I have this really strong and undeniable attraction for flying wings. So the saga begins... there have been several versions, both tangible and virtual that have led me here. A little reality combined with a whole lot of design research, for better or worse, has now pointed me in this direction.

X-1: Basically stock Great Planes Slinger. Single pusher, but with an extremely "hot" power setup. Fast and stable, but the elevons would see issues with demanding control input at speed.

X-3: This was a Quad EDF Wing. This project was scrapped on the bench due to design issues.... far too early in the learning curve for such an aggressive design.

Off to the drawing board...

After months of contemplation and research, I focused on a multiphase approach.

The goal was to come up with a flying wing that was big enough, fast enough and rugged enough to meet my expectations and to specifically handle the grass club field... and with as many of the other points of interest covered... i.e., stability, maneuverability, etc. So... this spanned not 1, not 2, but 3 wing thing projects!

DragonWing X-1B:

Concept: Modify the stock Slinger airframe to accept... (this one was actually an after thought after start the build on the X-2... explanation later)
  1. 3s
  2. fixed landing gear
  3. the X-1 power system and improved motor mount (with reflex)
  4. more rigid, hinged elevons
  5. angled winglets
  6. scale change
  7. rudder
DragonWing X-2:

Concept: Inspired by the Northrop N9MB,
  1. 3s
  2. sheeted foam core wings
  3. twin pusher
  4. drag rudders
  5. retracts
  6. +10 inch wingspan
  7. angled winglets
  8. rudder(s)
  9. flaps
  10. scale change
DragonWing X-3B:

Concept: X-2 features but...
  1. 4s
  2. Twin 66mm EDF's @ approx. 3lbs. of thrust each
The X-1B and X-2 builds are in progress and are overdue for some pictures.... which will be in the next post!

Thanks for watching!
