Why V-Bar?.....

Why not?
Because it's expensive and the manual and user interface are still just a pretty rough translation in a significant number of places? (Sorry, but you did ask. )

VBar is a fine product (I have two of them), but people on a budget can get a perfectly good flybarless unit (or this one--same guts) now for a LOT less than a VBar.

No vibe analyzer, bank switching, log, or governor (yet...), but you do get access to the PID controller settings if you want them. And the excellent software is free, not $50 extra--you can just go through the software setup steps and it works, or you can tweak to your heart's content.

(Lots of discussion and help on the HF Flybarless forum and other sites, too.)

Just sayin...

Not to try to one (or 2) up you, but I have 4 installed, one on the way for my X7.

No Offense, but I wont put a $50 FBL unit in my $3000 Heli... Just like I wont use $3 servos on the cyclic of a 450.

A few more reasons why V-bar~ Mr. Mel and Readyheli!

No offense taken. That's cool that you have a great controller on a super heli!

Most people fly helis that cost closer to $300 than $3000, however, and a FBL unit that is affordable ($40 at eHirobo.com, not $50), easy to install and set up, and highly configurable is great choice for many of them.

The bigger story here, I think, is that flybarless technology is mainstream and very affordable now, and that it's not necessary to invest in a controller that costs about as much as the rest of the heli combined. There will always be room for premium brands with premium performance and premium price tags, like VBar, of course (though clearly, prices are trending downwards (and fast!), as they always do as a technology matures). It's nice to have choices!

So spend less.. get no support.. no features and risk your $500-$3000+ dollar investment to a clone knockoff product..

yeh.. don't even get me started here..

I personally wouldn't run that on even a 250.. if you want cheap go BeastX or AR7200BX at least they are proven and have good support.

Sorry you get what you pay for.. Ive flown nearly every FBL system out there now and keep going back to Vbar there really is no comparison.

The only other system that I have my eye on now is the new Spartan.. and it should rock..

You do spend less (a LOT less) and there are some nice features (see the screenshots). The components look good as do the boards, and the unit comes in a metal(!) case. Again, this would be a good choice for an average flier with a typical 400-class heli, but not something for a $3000 unit, for which at the very least I'd think you'd want redundant receivers.

Already have.

Hundreds of people--probably thousands--are flying the CopterX and ZYX units (same unit, different packaging) now, so they're pretty much proven. There is excellent support both here on HF and on competitor sites--entire communities now. And again, you get access to some key settings on these units that you don't have access to on a VBar.

I've flown a bunch myself, and I agree that VBar is the best of the bunch (the excellent integrated governor alone makes it a stand-out product). But not everybody wants to drive a Cadillac, or can afford one. And as for "getting what you pay for," you're paying a premium for the VBar. I'll bet they drop their price significantly soon to stay competitive in a market increasingly crowded by worthy competitors (or better, come out with an entry-level model).

There was a time not that long ago when there was the IBM Personal Computer and a few inferior "clones." I think this might be kind of a parallel developmental path...

I have to look at my time/money factor. I would have to est. maybe 100 or more hours spent looking, at minimum wage I could have bought 2 Vbars by now.
I made the switch from 3gx to Vbar and havent looked back since. I now own 2 of them. I was having bobble in forward flight that I could not get rid of. When I switched put the bird up and instantly could feel the difference.

Not to mention all the features everybody has mentioned I cant imagine a unit being much better than this. The only thing they could do to make it even better is program it to utilize more channels from your radio so you could bank switch and change gains on gyros independently of bank swtiching but its really not even that big a deal you can just set different gains in different banks. Bank switching is pretty much the coolest feature of the vbar in my opinion. I Also would not mind a vibration log if they could add that feature but again just a couple things that might get added someday.

Make the switch you will not regret it. And hell even if you hate it you can sell the damn thing for pretty near what you bought it for. They always hold their value well and are easy to get rid of.
