Default King IV no power

Hi. I have a King IV that I've never actually flown, except to crash it into the ground a couple of times within seconds of getting airborne. The last time I had to rebuild it all to replace the air frame. So, I haven't tried in over a year, but I've been practicing on a Blade 120SR and have gotten to the point that I wanted to give it another shot, but I now have a problem.

When I try to throttle up the engine it tries to spin the rotor, but struggles to do so and can't even get a full turn in. The engine would get very hot (untouchable) so I thought it must have died and bought a new one, but that does the same thing. Could this be an ESC issue? Battery? The battery could have gone bad I suppose since I wasn't maintaining it all that time, but would the engine get so hot if the battery were just dying?

I have no idea how to troubleshoot, and don't want to just start buying parts, so thanks for any advice.

hi there
i dont own a king but here is what i would do.
firstly can tou rotate the main gear my hand,it should (with the heli nose pointing left) spin freely anti clockwise, and when turned clockwise the main blades and tail should spin freely. if not then its a wise idea to check the meshing between the main gear and motor pinion.a peice of paper should go between the gear and pinion and come out the other side crinkled but not ripped, check the belt tention, two tight isnt good as this will stresh the motor and also you run the risk of it snapping

this should get you started for now,if your happy with all the above then pop the head off and check the bareings both top and bottom to see if they have bound up

cheers
antony

Default Make sure things work by hand before powering up

Youre going to burn something up eventually. Dayshadow has the idea. Everything should turn/move freely by hand. It sounds as if maybe the pinion and maingear mesh is too tight. I would loosen the two motor mount bolts and back it away from the maingear OR remove the maingear. Spin the pinion by hand and make sure it turns. It wont be smooth because of the magnets inside. If it spins by hand,THEN power it up to see if it still gets hot.

If the motor is ok, then you just continue looking for binding down the line. Maingear would be next in line. Onewway bearing working right? Mainshaft with maingear assembled turns free? Belt and tailrotor assy turns free? Sometimes it takes some hunting around to find a bug in these, be patient, rule out one component at a time, change just one part at a time if you think something might be defective.
