Default How can I get this bearing out?

The top bearing in my motor totally disintegrated, and all that's left is the outer ring (race, is it called?). Problem is the outer race is stuck in the motors top plate, and it is sunk in flush so I cannot grab ahold of it to get it out. I tried prying it with a screwdriver, but my angle isn't ideal and I couldn't budge it. The hole below it is smaller, so I can't pop it out from underneath or anything. I tried using a torch to heat it a little, but I still can't get enough grip to extract it! Any ideas?? Here is a photo...

cut some small grooves in the top of the bearing with dremel disk, heat the surrounding area with gas torch then either use a screwdriver type punch in the groove and hit sideways to break the bearing loose from the bell, if you can make big enough grooves you can make up a flat screwdriver like plate and turn when heated, if there are no loctite or glue on the bearing finding a shaft that has a snug fit on the bearing you will be able to remove it by back and forth rocking motion while pulling, maybe try this first, use heat as well, not on bearing but surrounding area

You might be able to get it to drop out by applying heat to the aluminum surrounding the bearing race (as Stolla suggested) and ice to the steel race itself.

We used to do this to get the bearings out of the OS engines (40/45/60 FSR's) that were stubborn, back in the 1980's.

Default Got it!

Well I finally got it out! Sort of a combination of everyone's ideas. I couldnt get a dremel disc in there, it was just too small an area. I also tried the torch/ice-cube method, but it wasn't budging AT ALL!

I decided that i needed to grind or cut a small section of the race out, so it would basically be a "C" shape instead of a full circle. Then I could hopefully pry part of the bearing away from the edge and pop it out.

I tried one of those helical twist cutting bits, but it didnt even put a scratch on the bearing race.

Then, I tried one of the Dremel cone-shaped grinding bits, and it wore a slight dent into the race, but wouldnt cut all the way through as it was too large a diameter.

Finally I found a smaller diameter grinding bit (about 3/16") and was able to slowly grind all the way through one spot of the bearing race.

But it was stuck in there so well (no bearing retainer at all), that I still couldn't pry it away! So, I heated the hell out of it with my torch, and finally popped it out with a small flathead screwdriver!

Motor went back together with new bearings, and I will try it out today!

FINALLY!
