Default KK board questions - setup

So I got the KK black board version 5.5 (Atmega 168PA). I think firmware version 2.5 (x) is loaded and I also have the USBasp programmer. I have a few questions since I'm not familiar with this board.

1. Is there a way to tell what firmware is loaded on the board?
2. What flashtool is recommended? I have kkmulticopterflashtool v0.62 and AVR Studio 4. AVR is giving error when trying to select programmer. The other flash tool loads.
3. Can the board get damaged if you set the wrong settings upon flashing?
4. Is there a difference in firmware between blue and black?

1. Possibly but I have never bothered just load what you want to try next.
2. Use KK or Extreme Burner.
3. Highly unlikely.
4. Choose the firmware from the list in KK according to your board and you can't go to far wrong, most I think now like 4.7 from Kaptain K or 2.5 from Minsoo Kim.

This might help:

I watched it last night, I believe they said it is the KK board.

Very informative video, thanks. I loaded fw 4.7 from a hex file (taken from rcgroups) with no issues. Everything is setup but have a very small oscillation from forward flight to a hover. My pots settings are roll 40%, pitch 0% and yaw 50%.

Does anyone know if firmware v4.7 supports changing flight mode with the tx like you can with v2.5?

What are the differences between the different modes?

I would have thought you would need more than 0% on pitch, especially considering you have an oscillation during transition to FF.

I tried setting the roll (P) and got it where it hovers nice and also set it for forward flight so that it does not pitch up using pitch (I) but still get a slight oscillation coming to a hover. The quad is/was a Walker UFO MX400. All electronics removed. Here is the setup.

Original Walkera MX400 frame, motors and props.
KK board v5.5 running firmware v4.7
Power distribution board

did you calibrate your ESCs? Individually using the RX and all at once using the TX?

Yes, I think its a matter of setting the pots correctly.

I would but I don't have this board hooked up at the moment. I'm trying out another board (FY-90Q) on the MX400 frame. Attached is another image. Hope this one works for you.

Those FY-90Q boards look interesting with lots of features, how is it going? I would try one but currently using four different boards already....

Try using several layer of foam tape to mount the board, rather than using screws.

FY-90Q board is not bad at all. It does a good job auto leveling but sensitive to vibration. If you have a perfect setup, this board does its job. Since I have the KK board and now waiting for the KK2, I will more than likely sell the FY-90Q. I've only had it for almost 3 weeks.

I changed the walkera props to 1045 blades and the oscillation disappeared.
