Ok, so I used to have some shrink-tube over the tail motor and it came off. I didn't get around to replacing it and the inevitable has happened - yep, knocked the end-cap off the motor! Lesson learned!
Anyone used a different motor and if so what? I'd rather not replace the who lot for the sake of a motor and I'm not scared of the soldering involved. Just to add, I'm in the UK so may not have access to the range of stuff in the U.S. Out of interest, the motor's had a heap of use over 18 months and showed no signs of being worn out. The commutator is un-worn and the brushes likewise (but they got twisted up in the spill).

Get a tailboom with motor for the mcp-x...make sure to get the longer tail/boom.

I'd think you'd have problems with tail blowout with the bigger motor. That isn't the case?

I was under the impression that the mSR X or mCP X tail has a more powerful motor and I don't think the mSR needs a longer boom. What I was really after was an equivalent motor-only option.

The mSR doesn't need a longer boom. It throws off the center of gravity badly. If the motor is good, the tail will NOT blow out, even with punches of full throttle climbing.
If the stock tail boom is not available, you can use the mCX2 drive motor with the same blue and red colored wires. It's the same motor. DO NOT use the reverse rotation mCX2 motor with the black and white wires, it's designed to spin the other way and it will burn out quickly if you run it backwards.

Usually you can crush the pinion into pieces with a pair of heavy wire cutters squeezed between the gear teeth.

I have a longer boom on my msr-x. Actually it is the tailboom/motor from an MCP-X v2.
Turns much better and handles much better.

mSR X is a rather different bird. I've never had issues with the stock tail on the mSR.
