Just to follow up, I finally got the tail fixed: new rotor hub, new shaft, new blade grip. I flew it this morning and all is well with the world. Lifts off straight, nice stable flight. The rotor hub was definitely bent. The tail shaft looked OK but a replaced it anyway. The blade grip was OK but I had to sacrifice to get one of the rotor hub screws out. The hex head stripped so I had to grind a notch.
So lesson learned: cyclic symptoms can 100% be due to something wrong in the tail. The balance of the DS95i seems to be a non issue.
