eyefly .. the voltage detector won't be able to pinpoint much for you.
What your picking up is the inductance of the motor/esc leads. A brushless motor and a 3 phase ac motor are the same thing. I did a few tests a while ago with my clip on ampmeter, i could read the amperage per leg on the motor. The esc is just a power inverter , not as good as a varaible frequency drive (VFD) but a similar device. I suspect a variable voltage unit. This would explain why it's best to get into the 80% + range for efficency. A VFD has full hp at any rpm. I'd think the boom would generate a charge then flash it off , the volt tick is looking for an AC voltage. There handy devices though, but as an electrician i don't trust them 100% but rather confirm what i know/suspect. A test to see if its on is to run it up and down your sleeve a few times quick. That looks like the greenlee one , keep and eye on the end cap as there known to pop off if twisted the wrong way. Once the cap is lost it doesn't work. Martin |

I'm sure you'll be fine. Just run some ground tests or low hovers before some real flights. If you do, there is plenty to read here as for helps on dealing with the issues.

Quick update:
Since I sprayed the belt and tried electrically connecting the tail gears, I have not had one shutdown... 8 flights at about 50 minutes of time in the air. AR6200 still in the bottom tray. I have not grounded the negative side of the ESC to the motor yet. |

My post is back from the grave...Well, since it's here. I'll add a small piece. Since my last post, in Feb. 08, I've flown trouble free, over 70 flights, spraying the belt with anti static and creating continuity from the tail pulley to the front pully. I'm still on my original belt and the old AR6200 non-quick boot, in the bottom tray. Good luck!

Made all tail grounding mods (metal tail case, G-Force boom and belt grounding, G-Force ES discharge) - over 20 flights at dry and warm conditions - no any problem!

It's good to hear you're not having any problems. This site is great for helping others out with their helis. Have fun flying the 500! It's a lot fun for sure.

I can't believe I'm still seeing 500 ESD problems on the forum. Is there a reason that people don't want the torque-tube tail drive? Does anyone know of any lockout problems after making the switch? I've never seen or read about any. I battled with the problem for a while, adding a couple of ground leads, the metal tail-case, anti-static sprays, but none of them solved the problem. I switched to the TT tail drive, and I haven't had a problem since. Seems like a no-brainer, but maybe there are other reasons that people don't want to make the switch.
