Default T-Rex 500 Battery/Gearing ?

Hi All,

This is my first post and I'm in the process of building a new T-Rex 500 that I purchased at IRCHA show a few weeks ago.

I was wondering if anyone is running the T-Rex 500 with the 5 cell pack and the 15 tooth gear? What type of flight times are you seeing with this vs a 6 cell setup with a 13 tooth gear? I have about 4 of the 3 cell 2100 ma Zippy packs and was looking to run 2 of them in series but I'm guessing that will not be possible with a 15 tooth gear, correct?

I was looking at the Outrage packs from HeliDirect and was wondering if the 5 vs 6 cell is a better way to go? I have about 6 years worth of flying in on helis and stick to the sport flying mode with some 3D on occasion.

Thanks for any feedback,

There are more options than meets the eye. Your motor and esc are also to be considered. You also need to know what kind of head speed you want to run, and what kind of flying you want to do.

For example, I run 5s 4000mah protec batts with a hacker 8 pole 1350kv motor with a Jazz 55 esc and a 17t pinion. On this particular setup, I get about 2500rpm at 100% throttle curve. I have been flying about 6-7 mins fff and still have been putting back in about 3000mah. It's all pretty confusing to me, but if you read up on it you'll figure it all out.

As a side note, RH has a pretty decent headspeed calculator to get a rough idea of how a particular setup will fly.

2dog,

I use 5s 3300 Fusion w/15t now. I had hover time around 7:30 if I remember what I posed on another thread and that was only 1600mah used. Of course hover is different than 3d and fff.

I emailed Jason Krause from his heli site and asked re 5s. He basically said 15t is what he recommends on 5s and 14t on 5s would have too low of headspeed and cause a wobble or oscillating.

I ran 6s 2200 (well 2 3s 2200's) and could safely get 5 minutes but that was right around 80% usage (do not want to go beyond 80% of battery capacity). That was on 12t if I remember correctly.

Should be a 12t and 13t that come with the kit.

Many say a 6s1p has a huge increase in performance especially for 3d.

I know of some people doing 3d on 5s to include Krause (well, I don't KNOW him) but he uses it as well.

Everybody will have their own opinion.

I chose 5s for the following:

My balancer goes up to 5s
Charger goes well beyond
5s is cheaper than 6s
Krause (the designer) uses 5s in a video on his site
Easier (no mods) to have 5s under the canopy
I am not into 3d yet and 5s will suit me for a long time, and could even through 3d if I ever am that good
Too many people argue about 2 3s packs and the disadvantages etc
Fusion 5s 3300 fits and balances well
Hobbycity (if I dare say it, let the trash talk begin) Zippy 5s 3300 will fit with no mods but is about 50 grams heavier than Fusion if I remember correctly

5s because I wanted to, thats why! I don't always do what everbody else does.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm going to run stock Align motor and ESC at this point.

I have a lot of learning to do and the stock setup will get me in the air and crashing the bird in no time I'm sure. I was looking at the Zippy 5s 3300 pack but the weight is my issue with that battery. I do have a HDX 450 that I fly and the Zippy's have worked well with that setup. I was looking at the Outrage packs in the 5S but they are OOS on those.

cbcelectech: Thanks for the RH info I will check that out.

One thing of note about using high capacity 5s batts, you usually have to do some kind of modding to get the relativly big battery under the canopy.

I have the battery tray lowered and the canopy moved forward to accept the bigger batt back

Default Mods for 5s to fit?

Well, I know the 5s Fusion 3300 fits with no mods what so ever. Also the Hobbycity Zippy 5s 3300 fits with no mods what so ever.

Not sure about any other 5s batts but you can get the dimensions of the Fusion on their website and compare to what you are looking into.

Also, no problem with weight balance with the Fusion 5s.

Not sure about zippy 5s have read there is no balance issue with it.

maybe it's just cause my 5s 4000's are a bit bigger than the other 5s on the block?

cbcelectech: The 4000 ma pack vs the 3300 should be larger, no? I'm going to stick with the 3300 version at this point in the 5S. How's you CG with the 4000 ma pack?

AzHeliCrasher The the 5s Fusion 3300 and the Zippys the only one's you have run?

Thanks for the help,
