There is a tab on the final gear that is a key to align the output spline to the potentiometer pin.
If the pin in the potentiometer fails, the servo will spin constantly.No stop.
The potentiometer provides an electronic stop point.

In flight the servos never go to full deflection, very little movement is required to perform even extreme 3D flights. No matter the size of helicopter.

If you watch a cockpit video of full size heli pilots, the controls are hardly moving. Same thing with rc.

If the servos were to go full tilt, you will not be able to control the heli.
The max position would result in a crash.
