The longest 15 minutes downtime...

Apart from my day-job as a programmer, I also operate various web sites and forums around the net. So when I was greeted with the message "We're making changes to server software. We'll be back in 15 minutes" (not the exact wording) on HeliFreak this morning, i was pretty sure about two things:

1) HeliFreak is being updated with new forum software

2) HeliFreak won't be back in 15 minutes...

It just never seems to work out that way. And wouldn't you know it, some 4-5 hours of downtime later, HeliFreak is back with new Blog software, Albums and more "Social Networking" features than you can throw a stick at. That's some long 15 minutes.

Personally, I like to time my server upgrades to some time later at nights, but hey - nothing on here is life-critical and we can all use some fresh air every once in a while.

I wonder sometimes who's the man behind the curtains on this site. I think DebianDog has a lot to do with things around here, but I haven't figured it out quite yet. I'd also like to know what powers this site. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to ask that question...

Are the upgrades worth it? Well, time will tell. Most communities I host, or take part in usually get away with clean fast forum software and an ability to post pictures somehow. A social-networking-albums-blog-thingamabob can quickly overwhelm many members and actually take some life out of the community.

Then again, if people embrace the new features and start adding content to it asides from the main forums, the new features could add a lot of value for the members of this site and make HeliFreak even more of a Heli-Hobby destination.

Grab your chips, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Here's to HeliFreak 2.0 (or whatever we're at ).

Actually we came right back up then had a bit of an "issue". Everyone got right to work on the problem and no one thought to change the message :o

As a programmer you know the deal when stuff goes good in QA then when you go Production.... "issues"

I was a little slack on the message. Most of the time it should have said 2 hours.

Just thought it was funny . It was the kind of 15 minutes I would declare

Thanks for your good work guys. I know it's not always trivial, and often thankless.

The 15 minute one you saw was during the backup process. It was replaced with a 2 hour one after the backup was complete and verified. Turned into a few more, but you know how it always seems to happen if you develop.
