"No Expo" badge of honor

Posted 05-01-2008 at 06:45 PM by int2str

Reading the forums (here and elsewhere), I've come to the conclusion that many new and "new-ish" pilots seem to think that not having any exponential controls set on your transmitter is somewhat of a "badge of honor".

It seems like most threads centering around exponential have at least somebody chime in saying something along the lines of "I don't need no stinkin' expo - you should do without!". As a brand new pilot myself, I took these things to hard and flew without expo for the longest time.

Sure, no expo can be done - even for beginners. But that doesn't mean that you *should*. And corollary it does mean that you don't have to feel bad for dialing in some expo.

A pilot who's skills are way beyond what mine ever will be told me to run some expo. He ensured me he did to smooth out his hard 3D maneuvers. I did dial in expo and yupp, my flying has become much smoother in the air. Sure, I can still throw those sticks around and make the heli look like it's possessed, but when I fly my regular circuits and figure eights, the heli looks much smoother in the air now.

Of course everybody likes his heli controls a little different, and no one size fits all. But I just hope no new pilot gets "pressured" into running no expo just because he/she thinks that's it's a "rookie thing" - it's not.

I have run into a few crack pilots and they all run some expo for exactly the reasons you state. One guy who flies a TRex500 runs 35% on the tail just to keep it smooth.

My 500 isn't finished yet, but you can bet I will run expo on it like I do on my 450

I use some Expo. In the beginning with my 9Z I did not, but with the newer and much faster radios a little expo helps keep it smooth.
