HK-450 Flights #13-14: At the park

Posted 04-26-2009 at 06:30 AM by nasukaren

Some great flying yesterday at the park. Put one battery halfway through on the HK-450 before the motor pinion worked itself loose after a couple of pitch hops.

Next battery was at home. No problems on either.

In the evening, did some preventative maintenance. Replaced the drive belt as the one I had in it was looking frayed. I'm continuing to have problems with the tail rotor blade holder screws backing themselves out, even though they are well loctited. Replaced with...

HK-450 Flights #11-12: Maintenance mishaps (crash #3)

Flew the HK-450 in the evening. There were some maintenance mishaps that I had that led to 2 crashes one after the other. I'll count them as one crash.

I had replaced the tail rotor shaft with a 48mm long one from CNCHeli in order to try to get more travel and because the old one seemed considerably out of true. I hadn't quite properly set it up for the test flight and the tail wasn't holding without some effort.

On a spool-up, the bird leaned over and the blades hit...

HK-450 Flights #6-10: Burning through the batts

Posted 04-22-2009 at 08:07 PM by nasukaren

Today I really went through the batteries. Two in the morning, three in the afternoon. I took the training gear off in the afternoon. But two things happened -- first, one of the bearing screws in the tail backed out. Caught that in time before I piroed out of control.

Then two flights later, the tail authority went down. Checked it and one of my tail blade retaining screws had almost totally backed out.

Checked everything with loctite again. Not good.

On...

Weights

My Belt CP is 19.7 oz (558g) with 325mm woodies and no LiPo battery installed. A LiPo is 6 oz (170g) so AUW should be 728 g.

My HK-450 is 29 oz (822g) AUW with 325mm woodies, LiPo, and training gear. Without the training gear, AUW is 26.5 oz (750g).

HK-450 Flight #5: Morning hover

Posted 04-21-2009 at 07:46 AM by nasukaren

I hovered my HK-450 around my back yard, until I realized I didn't have my horizontal and vertical fins installed -- because they were downstairs getting spray painted!

The irony was that it was flying great! And because I had training gear on, it didn't really matter than I didn't have a tail fin.
