Heli-Log 3:14:2017

Ah yes…March. Happy Pi day!

Once again, we lucked out and were only “side-swiped” by the snow storm that moved across the US. Others are not that fortunate. I haven’t heard how the NIU students did at their competition…

Mark and I ventured indoors on Sunday for some micro heli flying. The day started off by forgetting the charger for the LiPo’s, and breaking all 3 helis. I started with my first mCPx heli and managed to smack into the wall sideways. Well that broke the tail boom at the frame. Then I tried the Blade 130 only to have the tail blade holder come off the hub 3 seconds into a takeoff hover. And that vibration broke the tail housing. And the second mCPx had a tail issue from the last time out. I replaced it with what I thought was a new tail assembly, but it didn’t want to work, so I installed the last backup tail I had. It worked somewhat, but I had to use the tail blade from the other tail assembly and the motor shaft is slightly bigger!

There was a very small section of the blade that was holding on to the motor shaft, enough to manage a couple of flights. So I have place an order for some replacement part (some upgrade parts), and will have the 3 ready for this weekend.

My Whiplash Nitro…

Ok…I replaced the pinion with a 14 tooth pinion (the factory is 15 tooth), replaced one pinion bearing, changed the dampners in the head from blue to clear, replaced the feathering shaft, and cleaned and greased the thrust bearings, and forgot to replace the clutch. I might need to drop the motor and change that… So now, to see if that changes anything.

My Whiplash gasser

Still waiting for version 2…no word yet?

After thoughts…

I made the pre-order list for the new OXY2 heli! Now I am waiting for the email to send money! I’m not sure what I plan to use for electronics, but I have plenty of time to decide! I am hoping this little heli will fill my needs for an indoor heli to practice on. I am getting tired of not being able to work on the maneuver I would like with slightly under powered helis. The OXY2 is stated to have a head speed from 4K to 6K! Ouch! That’s way higher than what I would need for indoors. However, it can be dropped for a softer but still authoritative flight, so that is what I will be looking to do, or setup as.

Until next time…
