New Canon HD camcorders announced at CES

Posted 01-09-2010 at 11:52 PM by TheBum

I'm drooling over the Canon HD camcorder models announced at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. Maybe getting one would convince me to do more flight videos. The tough part will be deciding on a model.

I really don't need the still photo resolution of the S series because I already have a nice 10 megapixel Canon digital SLR (Rebel XTi). However, I love the large (3.5") touch screen on the S series and the fact that the highest end model (HF S21) has an electronic viewfinder, which would come in really handy for bright days. The price tag is the scary part: $1400.

On the other hand, the thing I don't like about using an EVF is that I miss out on direct viewing of the action; with the LCD, at least I can glance back and forth. Plus, I could save quite a bit of money even dropping to one of the S series models without the EVF (HF S20 or HF S200). One option for bright light issues with the LCD would be to devise some sort of hood for it.

I hate making decisions...

The Canons are pretty nice - however I just picked up "the camcorder of the year for 2009" and its fantastic. Its called the Panasonic HDC-TM300 and has the best all around image quality (low-light, outside etc) for a consumer camcorder.

B&H has it for just over a grand so it would be a little easier on you wallet, while still allowing you get get incredible HD footage.

Here is a test video I shot the other day of an Eagle: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S03OGqZGtd4[/ame]

Hopefully this helps shed some light on another option at a more reasonable price!
