The Romans

Posted 03-12-2008 at 12:54 PM by Tioli (Zen and the Art of RC Flying)

At our alternate flying field at the Old Kona Airport, there's a group of spectators called the "Romans" because they give a thumbs up or thumbs down for every flight. They actually hold up a card with a number score on it. They also have a cowbell that they ring after spectacular crashes. We fly early Sunday morning, till about noon. The Romans arrive about 8:00, they break out the ice, and tall glasses. They drink straight vodka and with orange juice as a chaser (it is morning, after...

Yet another in a long history of ESC failures on Tioli helis

Posted 03-11-2008 at 01:00 PM by Tioli (Zen and the Art of RC Flying)

I was using the stock motor and ESC on my Hurricane when I heard the motor surging in gentle forward flight. I hit throttle hold and brought it in safely but it was on fire--literally. Looked cool coming down, the smoke curling from under the canopy just like in the movies. I was yelling for someone to take pictures, but when they turned around to see, they were frozen in fascination.

It looks bad, but I only lost two cheapie servos, a couple ball links, the ESC, and the BEC. The...

Mildly amusing aphorisms

Somebody sent me a bunch of truisms about flight. These are the best:

When one engine fails on a twin-engine airplane you always have enough power left to get you to the scene of the crash.' - Anonymous

Mankind has a perfect record in aviation; we never left one up there!'

If you're faced with a forced landing, fly the thing as far into the crash as possible.' - Bob Hoover (renowned aerobatic and test pilot)

Never fly in the same...

Zen and the Art of RC Helicopter Flying

Posted 03-10-2008 at 01:51 PM by Tioli (Zen and the Art of RC Flying)

A noted sociologist, Anthony Campolo, used to ask his students "how long have you been alive?" They'd answer the usual "21 years," or whatever. When he pressed them, "how long have you been ALIVE?" they'd finally get it, and answer, "oh about 20 seconds or so..." He meant, of course, how long have you really been present in the moment--not thinking about what comes next, or what happened before, or what you're thinking, or what you're feeling, or what music...

Scale Projects

Posted 03-10-2008 at 01:32 PM by Tioli (Zen and the Art of RC Flying)

We're working on several scale projects for a customer. Sunday we maidened the Century Models Bell G-47. We had tail issues, so replaced the GWS rate gyro with a GY401 at the field. That improved things a bit. We cut the flight short, preferring to set it up on a JR9303 and work out the bugs, then transfer it back to the customer's Futaba 6EX.

The H500E from Jet-Tech models has T-Rex 450SA mechanics. It was an easy build and flew fine.

Also in the works is a Century...
