3D Dave Looks like it fits pretty nicely. Probably better suited for the plane though.

I think that reptile is looking for a ride.

Yes, I'm sure it will be legal. It just might be required to jump through some hoops.

I just got my AMA renewal too, but still have to order my permit.

FR4-Pilot Castle recommends it for a 450 size heli, but we all know this is really a 325 so, yea.

The heli is slightly nose heavy, and will be the same inverted. Good thing I'm not used to flying in perfect conditions anymore.

I do like how the battery wires route now The esc's motor wires probably could be about an inch shorter. If it sucks in the heli then it'll go in one of my planes.

We'll see what happens during some extra cautious test flights That is IF this hobby is still legal come nice weather. I just received my 2020 AMA and DuPage credentials. Hopefully these aren't the last ones I buy.

3D Dave Well, my initial concern was weight/size. I think the fires were confined to the Ice series.

When I had mine, I used the Castle Phoenix 45 as it was plenty for the MT and was very small and lightweight. I built the MT SE for a friend and we put the Phoenix 35 in it. I don't recall what the weights were but they were just shrink-wrapped boards.

I had an original Castle 85 w/heatsink on my TT E550 and it was not much larger than that Edge 50 and weighed a ton.

Just looked like too much ESC for a 450 size heli. Maybe the picture is deceiving.

Nothing wrong with experimenting though.

FR4-Pilot New heli - no, unfortunately

Going in the Mini-Titan - Yes, for a while at least. Thinking it would be interesting to see some data after my flights.

Are your concerns about weight, fires, both, other?

I'm hoping I'm not overlooking lessons from the past:
  • CastleCreations fires - mostly from the HV line of ESCs.
  • ESCs overheating - using the lite versions with inadequate airflow, improper setup, etc.
  • ICE 50 - 60g; Lite 50g, used on Mini-Titans back in 'the day'.
  • Edge 50 - 70g; Lite 56g, current versions, ICE discontinued, slightly heavier.
  • YEP45A (for comparison) - 65g. Was running this for a while on my B400.

3D Dave That can't be going on your mini Titan?

New heli?

Rebuild 2020

4 test flights went very well. Let the gyro/radio/ESC tweaking begin !

The Typhoon definitely has more power output capability than the Alpha. The climb out rates are pretty amazing now - had to reduce gyro gain from 80 to 75 to stop the tail from wagging !

Also, the Talon35 detected when the DSMX satellite became disconnected during a spool up and shut itself down, with a repeating three beep pattern. Sure enough, I hadn't plugged the satellite cable in all the way and it came loose as I was starting flight test flight #3. Pretty Cool !

Got a pre-owned CastleCreations Phoenix Edge 50 on the way, hopefully ...

Rebuild 2020

The $12 Exceed Alpha400 3500kV motor held up great, but it's a little notchy in the bearing department, and the tiny e-clip on the motor shaft flew away at some point. The replacement is a Turnigy Typhoon that I only used once on a Blade 400, which committed suicide during this motor's only flight. The motor survived but the label on the bell housing scuffed against the lipo so it's a bit unreadable. The Typhoon is a 3450kV and will be getting a 13T pinion.

The Talon35 is staying as well. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version, and re-adjusted all of the settings to my liking. This one will be setup in Governor High mode, and I'll have the following head speeds available by simply changing the (flat) throttle curve value: 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2800

Good Old Faithful GY401 will be replaced with a smaller GY520. The Hitec HSG-5084MG is staying as well. However, I had to move the ball on the servo arm in one hole per the 520's instructions. Now there's more resolution in the control system.

I'm replacing the original HobbyKing 6Ch DSM2 receiver with a Lemon 6Ch DSMX with satellite receiver. The DSM2 Rx worked great - never had any kind of problem what-so-ever. The little clear box I modified worked perfectly. The DSMX Rx will be mounted below the frame where it will be easy to get to.

The Hitec HS-65MG cyclic servos are staying. Originally I used Hitec HS-55s, which worked very well for years. These are just a little better, stronger, faster Had to file the servo mounts (wider) and make some spacers from cut sections of zip ties.

Going to try some alternate landing gear that B335 suggested a long time ago. They are from the Gaui Hurricane 500 and have been sitting in my parts bin for years. Some drilling and hole enlarging required (3mm holes). Borrowed some cap screws and lock nuts from my Century Swift stash.

The tail mechanics were a little dirty and needed to be cleaned. That buttery-smooth movement was just not there Aside from a crack in the tail pitch control slider everything else is just fine.

The main gears are in very good shape. Aside for two tiny hairline cracks where the Jesus bolt goes they just needed some cleaning and some fresh grease.

Amazingly, the all-plastic rotor head is just as smooth as it was on day 1. There is no slop what-so-ever.

It's been almost 10 years since I built this heli. It's got a few hundred flights on it. Time for a tear-down and inspection, and some part changes
