v22chap Not bad for a bicopter ... would like to see more detailed pictures of your setup .
These foam planes have allowed a lot of success in the bicopter area as you don't have the heavy tail hanging out the back making a hard to control moment arm .

Mr.Tan can't wait to see this thing completed! Def. looks like it should be a lot of fun.

hoot Moving along on the build. Nacelle mechanics almost complete.

hoot I won't be around this weekend. Goin camping.

I started selectively opening some of the parts bags to check out the quality. From what I see the parts are super high quality. I was initially concerned because of the China sourcing. The level of quality is up there with the best. All of the metal parts show no machine marks and no excessive deburring. The anodizing is smooth with dark consistent color. All anodizing is black.

The G10 nacelle frames are machined not stamped. The cut quality is excellent. I haven't done any fit checking but they look great.

The wings and tail pieces are built up, laser cut plywood internal framing with what looks to be balsa covering. The paint work is very good. I see no need for prep work on the wings and tail assemblies.

It comes with six carbon fiber blades. The blades look flawless.

At this point, just looking the ship over I gotta say Tom Mast and company really did a nice job with this model. I personally have a special interest in this model because I have been involved with the full scale Osprey since 1985. To see this turned into a truly well designed working Osprey is real treat for me.

This is going to be a fun build. Can't wait to build up the nacelles. I love this type of machine building.

Can't wait to see the fuselage. That's coming later.

hoot
It's here and it looks FANTASTIC!

It's here and by some odd luck I was home at lunch when the postman arrived. It required a signature.

I can tell you at fist look, I'm favorably impressed with the kit! Had to get back to the office. More later.

The profile fuse is a laminated foam board. VERY sturdy! The picture doesn't do it justice. It has the all of the panel lines impressed in it. Looks great.

hoot Mine is in transit.. Ship no. 6
09-25-2010 07:16 AM
flyerdave88 I received the same email. I hope it ships soon. I have my two scorpion motors and the two ICE 50's ready to go. I am going to use three 401's from other heli's I have for a start. I also need the four servos.

v22chap Must be close ,, as I just got and update email about a couple new videos on Rotormast website and it states keep watching as in Oct there will be a lot of new videos on youtube and their site of customers V22's

v22chap To late .. already pulled the trigger on some spartan quarks .. I have had good luck with these and they are easy to setup and small for some of my smaller birds and also in scale applications

so you may have to keep your bird out side for a bit in the winter so that they reach the air's temp.

At 63 yrs old I don't acclimate to the cold weather good anymore ,,,and therefore don't fly much in it
So that would n't have been a problem

The Rotormast controller does the gain controls for all 3 gyros through the pc user interface program .The heading hold or normal switching can be done on your TX ... but it is done for all 3 . You start the motors , spool up and just as you get about ready to lift off you can then switch all 3 into HH ... something about HH on the ground that makes the gyros hunt and that makes the ground resonance all the worse if trying to spool up in HH mode

Now will the pc user interface access the 502 ... dont' know as I have never messed with one ,but if you can change the HH and non HH mode ... with the TX ... then I am guessing that it should work since the same aux channel is what changes it in the 401 and I can't see futaba changing that much in their setup language .

CF_Machete you may want to save some cash and try 3 401 b's. my friend runs them on 2 of his birds and has not noticed a difference compared to his gy 401. I've tied it on my 500 and although I'm not flying circuits tail first, i have found them to be pretty decent. i even have on on my hobby king hell cat's ailerons....which make the bird flyable. they program just like a gy401 and are $13.00 each. The only draw back that I've heard about them is that they may not acclimatize as well as the gy401's do, so you may have to keep your bird out side for a bit in the winter so that they reach the air's temp.

v22chap I would say as long as it can be remotely controlled from the TX that it should be able to find it and work fine ,, but let me do the other check we pmed about for you before you order any more ..

I am using 401 because I had 3 in other helis that I wanted an excuse to upgrade them to something else ... so the 401's will be sacrificed to the V-22
09-20-2010 12:25 PM
hoot So let's say I use the GY520. Will his PC User interface be able to access the GY520 gain setting? This gyro is very different than a GY401.
09-20-2010 11:55 AM
v22chap Yea ,, it makes it hard being a new kit builder as he don't have the advantage of already testing many setups . There are a lot of 401 like gyro's out there ,,but I suspect that any of them with the " high quaility" SMM technology will work ... but might need different settings in the control unit to make it fly smooth ... I was just trying to say it should fly right the first time if a guy went with all his recommendations .... but I also know that is not true ... as no two birds setup with the same equipment ,by the same guy will ever fly the same .... I had a friend that flew FAI with MA stuff and we had this experience ...we worked many hours at the field together trying to get them to feel the same and they wouldn't ,, he even tried to get it so he didn't have to change tx programs on the two ... and that really didn't work
09-20-2010 10:36 AM
hoot Yea I fixed the typo. Meant 85's.

On the gyros, website says in two different places

Gyro: 3x AVCS – Heading Hold Gyro
3 gyros, high quality SMM, like 401 or similar

That's a lot of choices.

How are we supposed to know anything different? I'm starting to sound like I'm complaining. I think I'll wait till I receive it and wait till all of the questions get answered without having to go by second hand info. I do appreciate all of your help. Keep it coming!

v22chap Hoot
I hope you had a typo ... he suggest 5085's not 5065's ,, if you are thinking of 5065's then maybe that is the solution .

Why
85' torque is 50 at 4.8 .. dual ball bearings ,17 secs. speed

65 's are 22 at 4.8 ,, top bearing and karbonite gears ,.14 sec speed
So if you do it may throw off his contorller calculations and it may not transition well ... this would be my only worry . But as far as needing the digital for the ECCPM ,,, it is not needed as it is all mechanical from the servo to the swash and mixing is done in the controller .

Gyro's ,, I believe they are fine tuned in the controller program for their gain settings ....

He must be packing ,,,as I to am getting no responce to emails either

I would go with the 401's as that is what his program is written for ...here again if you use something different ,,he can't help you trouble shoot it if you are having problems .... even though the program can be changed to handle anything ... it might take a long time to find the right combination .

hoot I hope technical support will be better once they get some breathing room. I haven't been able to get questions answered.

So far here is where I am...

Bought:

(2 )Castle ICE50 ESC's
(4) Blue LiPo 4-Cell 2200mAh 2200mAh-4S1P

To Buy:

Either HS-85MG's or HS-5085MG's. Is the digital one important. I didn't have good luck with a set of HS-5065's on a Trex450 a while back.

What gyros ? Ones that have the external gain settings on the face of the gyro like the 401?
The reason I ask is the newer ones, gain is changed from the radio or external programmer/laptop. You would need three channels for the three gyros? Or does the controller handle it some way?
