Changed 510 servos from nylon to metal gears

With the metal gears, need to swap the sheet metal screw for a machine screw, not included with metal gear sets because if replacing MG with MG, the servo already came with the machine screw


The nylon gear sets are cheap, work well but I'm going to see if the MG sets are worthwhile. MG's break too but I hope it is less often than nylon such that the cost is a wash over time. And this should mean less time per crash rebuild.


Usually only one or two teeth have broken in past crashes. This last crash was a full speed run into asphalt. The damage was more spectacular. MG servos would likely have lost a tooth or two on this one.


Teeth scattered up into the case top as well.

I did the same. They have survived two crashes so far and have worked flawlessly. It's a great feeling putting in good metal parts after changing so many flimsy nylon gears!

Thanks Vince, that's very encouraging.

Though it was not hard to change out the nylon gear sets, it was just one more step in the rebuild. Usually each crash took out at least one nylon set. The last crash, all three so I thought it was the perfect time to swap them out and hope they were as good as other MG servos out there.

Looking forward to the next crash. Wait, I didn't say that, did I?

I think even you big crash Tow (I saw it first hand ) your MG's would survive since plastic link would break first.. that's my experience with all my 500 crashes.. remember 8 or so hard ones last year? No issues after switching to MG.

Also.. recall my 550 tail hit? Wreck every single bearing in the tail.. even the 8 or so tiny ones... and broke the pastic link.. the 650MG is silky smooth... that surprised me.

OH, the 650MG survived. OK, that is a surprise.

On the then nylon geared 510 servos, the impact was so severe to the servos, not only did all those nylon gears shatter, one of the servo arms sheared off TOO!
So one servo had sheared gears and servo arm. I would have thought one or the other but the gears didn't give soon enough to save the arm and vice versa

Glad I wasn't a servo that day.

On my FBL T500, running Hitec MG servos, the servo connection to the head is so direct that I was destroying servos including cases, motors and yes, metal gears in even relatively light crashes.

Something has to break, I want the $6 gear set to break, not the $50 servo.
Just what I have found with FBL.
Before FBL the MG's were great.

Of course the real answer is to not crash....

Lets just give it a few days and Mike will test the crash durability of his new 510MG gears.

Agreed, just as it is best to shear the teeth of the main gear instead of having to replace the ESC or motor

I think the small gear or gears would shear teeth before losing the servo motor. Just a guess though, don't send me the bill(s) for bad servo motors after changing to MG servo gear sets
