Default Walkera Ladybird QR Review - Pictures, Video, Flight Times, and Thrust

Walkera Ladybird QR Series

First Impressions:

The Ladybird looks nice. It is small in size and it fits in my hand. It is very light weight.
It feels well built and should take a crash pretty well.
It has a unique sound to it with the 4 motors.

I have never flown anything but helicopters for over 5 years so I was curious how a quad would fly.
I would say it is a bit like a coaxial helicopter in a way but also very different than a helicopter.
The Ladybird is ultra stable and very smooth flying. It has good power with the stock motors.
After I added some D/R and Expo I was able to fly it good for the first quad I have ever flown.
The flight time is very good. I was surprised that the stock battery got the same flight time as the Hyperion 240 mah 25C battery and had the same power.

Pros:
  • Ultra stable and smooth flying.
  • Long flight time.
  • Responsive and super fast forward flight.
  • Replacement parts are not expensive.
  • 6 axis mode and 3 axis mode for the newer version firmware 2.0 and higher.
Firmware version number is on the bottom of the RX.
3 axis mode was added for 3D-Flipping. Older version firmware only has 6 axis mode.
Cons:
  • None so far.

Updates:
  • 4-25-12
The Ladybird has been doing well in a crash. I have crashed it on my hard wood floor a few times with no damage.
I did split 3 out of 4 motor booms flipping it outside and crashing hard into the cement a couple of times.
Also bent and twisted the blades too. The booms may have split when I hit the cement and not the grass, not sure. The blades bent on the grass though learning to flip it.
I bent the blades back and it hovers and flies well even with the 3 split motor booms.

Transmitter Settings:

Posted in my RX/TX Sticky.

Helircstore dot com sent me the Ladybird to review. I normally always buy the helicopters that I review
but there are too many of them so if an offer is made to get a helicopter, Quad, or TX to review I will take it.
The condition is that I can do an unbiased review on the product to give it a good or bad review.

I flew InTheWay's Lady-Bird for a bit and I really liked it even though before flying it, thinking I wouldn't like a quad.

I think it might actually be very good for new pilots learning orientation because although it has the stability of a multi-rotor bird, it can get wild enough so that it doesn't put you to sleep flying it as a Co-Ax would. You can get up to some wickedness with it!

I'd consider getting one!

I didn't think I would like a quad either. It is fun to fly once you get the hang of it.
It is kind of like a coax helicopter and an airplane combined. It is very fast and quick responding.

Let's see the Hawk try to get my Ladybird!

Do you think it has enough thrust to lift a plastic kit body?
Might buy one and put a Harrier jump jet over it!!

Not sure. Depends on the weight of the plastic kit body.
I can weigh the stock Ladybird canopy if you want.
A Harrier jump jet would be cool!
Post here if you try it out.

Default HD outdoor videos added

Just added HD outdoor videos to the review including flip attempts.

Also added setup for AERO mode in my setup guide.
Now there are HELI mode and AERO mode setup options.

It flips really well!

Too bad the ground rushed up to snatch it out of the air!

Seriously though, with a bit of altitude, it seems it would do rather well!

It's been done before but on a much larger scale. Check this video out.

Could you measure the lengh between 2 of the motor shafts and the diameter of the blades please?

Awesome video. I want one!

Lengh between 2 of the motor shafts = 86mm

Diameter of the blades = 55mm

Default QR Ladybird

I have just received my QR Ladybird and Devo 7 . For some reason it just will not hover. As soon as I apply throttle it races forward. I must be doing something wrong as all videos I watch of the ladybird show it rising steadily upward NOT racing forrward.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Things to check.
CG, battery to far forward.
Make sure all trims are centered on the TX.
Make sure all subtrims are zero in the TX.
Make sure REVERS in the TX are all normal.

The Ladybird would be better choice IMO than the Mini and 02s.

Thanks for the reply Tom. Unfortunately I have no idea how to check the subtrims or REVERS on the TX. The trims appear to be centred (I worked that much out lol)

Your welcome.
For subtrim and reverse go into FUNCTION - REVERS and FUNCTION - SUBTR.
All reverse should be set at NORM. All subtrim should be set at 0.0%.
It doesn't sound like you have any reversed but I would check subtrim and reverse for trouble shooting purposes.
Also check your blades. A blade may be bent up or down or twisted which may cause it to race forward on you.
These are all the things I can think of. If none of them are the problem, post and someone else might know what the problem is.

Thanks again Tom .. all settings appear to be correct. I took it outside today where I had more room. I got it into the air but had little control. It did not hover but kept zooming off at a tangent or rising way high and only way to stop it disappearing was to cut thrust completely. At one time it went so high I could barely see it and had no idea how to lower it except to cut the thrust completely.

Correct me if I am wrong but if I STEADILY increase thrust without using any other controls it should rise and hover until I apply other directional controls? It binds to the red LED by the way. I have no idea what the Gear, Aux2 and FMD switches do at all.

I just want to be able to get it 6 ft off the ground hovering, then land it and practice until I am confident to take it higher. Are the stick controls on the DEVO 7 that touchy? If so is there a way of "taming them for newbs like me?

See my TX setup guide. https://www.helifreak.com/showpost.p...9&postcount=24
You should assign the FMD for gyro gains.
You can set 1 position of FMD for 6 axis mode (Red LED for normal flying) and one position for 3D flipping
and rolling which is 3 axis mode (Green LED).
Gear and Aux2 are not used for the Ladybird.

You can tame it waaaay down! I had to do it until I got use to it.

Try these settings. I used option 2.

Start with Option 1 and work you way down the options if you need it more tame.
You can use more than +30% Expo if you want.

DREXP

Option 1.

Pos 0: ELEV D/R - 80% EXP +30%
Pos 0: AILE D/R - 80%, EXP +30%
Pos 0: RUDD D/R - 100% EXP LIN

Option 2.

Pos 0: ELEV D/R - 70% EXP +30%
Pos 0: AILE D/R - 70%, EXP +30%
Pos 0: RUDD D/R - 100% EXP LIN

Option 3.

Pos 0: ELEV D/R - 60% EXP +30%
Pos 0: AILE D/R - 60%, EXP +30%
Pos 0: RUDD D/R - 100% EXP LIN

Option 4.

Pos 0: ELEV D/R - 50% EXP +30%
Pos 0: AILE D/R - 50%, EXP +30%
Pos 0: RUDD D/R - 100% EXP LIN

I don't think it will rise straight up from a hover. It may want to go in one direction
or the other a bit.
Mine has three split booms and three of the blades have been bent from flipping it
and crashing on cement or I would check to see if mine can rise straight to a hover and stay
there for a bit without using any other controls.

Default QR Ladybird

Thanks again Tom. I used settings and was able to "fly" it a little bit but it still wanted to keep going in one direction and I could not turn it around to come back towards me it instead ploughed into the ground and the canopy came off and a propeller twisted badly. Is there a way to make it respond quicker to turning?

Also my thrust stick only has to go to midway to be at 100% is this normal? How do you stop it from going too high?

Hopefully parts can be obtained as I am now using the spare set of propellers and took me a while to realise that they also must be put in the right place on the ladybird will not lift off.

What does increasing "exp" do? I set my Elevators / Aerilons @ 50%.

I accidentally switched the FMD switch to position 2 and the ladybird took off until it was not visible in the sky. I killed the thrust and eventually found it about 200 m away. Should the FMD switch do that in position 2?

Also I cannot get the LED to bind "green" which is probably a good thing at the moment as that is stunt mode I think?

Sorry about all the questions please feel free to tell me to stop if it is getting too much

Not normal. Mine doesn't go to 100% throttle at mid stick. I get 100% throttle
at full throttle. Check your throttle curves. Make sure they are set to these settings.

PL = 0.0%
P1 = INH
P2 - INH
PM = 50.0%
P3 = INH
P4 = INH
PH = 100.0%

No. It will only make it less stable so you can flip and roll it.

Mine will bind in red or green. Green LED is stunt mode.

Sorry about all the questions please feel free to tell me to stop if it is getting too much

The first thing you need to make sure is all the TX settings are correct.
You might want to reset your model in the TX and follow
my setup guide.
Make sure the battery CG is correct. Not too far forward or backwards.
Try in the middle and move forward or backwards as needed.
Make sure none of your blades are bent or twisted.
Make sure none of your motor shafts are bent.

It would help if you could post some videos.
