What Servos For 130X Tail: Comparisons After DS35 Debacle

Discussion:

Is Walkera's WK-03-4 The Current Servo Of Choice?

Beginning with the WK-03-4, this nice servo is slower than the DS-35 and the stock, which is listed up to .09 sec @ 4.8 V. Will the .03 sec difference matter? It would have to be tested. Perhaps important to remember, it is made for a 120 and not a 130-size helicopter. The torque is 70 g/cm less than the stock (90g less than the DS35) as they are listed anyway. For this reason I would recommend insuring one has nothing bind and perhaps using weighted tail blade grips.

I suspect the Walkera servo would draw very little current, and, if it performs in these- and all the other needed aspects (other specifications like dead-zone are very important as we just found out with the DS35), might just be the one to use now that the DS35 has lost its original appeal, at least until getting the Hitec HS-5035HD. Has anyone here tried it?

Programming The Hitec HS-5035HD?

The HS-5035HD is said to be programmable. Perhaps someone could post a recommended servo programmer (e.g. http://www.hitecrcd.com/products/ser...rs/hfp-25.html) and give us their parameters for the 130X tail as well as why they chose them?

Mounting?

The Hitec dimensions will call for its own mount, while the WK-03-4 would probably fit quite well with the DS35 mounts that have become popular and wide spread. I see this as a major advantage of the WK-03-4 along with its proven track record in the Walkera micro helicopter. For this reason I mentioned it here first.

What About Other Servos?

The JR DS188 at 6g seems a bit heavy to me and larger dimension would require it's own mount. One user, Daddy B, seems to have some limited success with it as discussed in his post.

Since going down this road, does anyone have experience with the Turnigy TGY-D1290P, which at first glance looks like a potential close fit (closer than the WK-03-4 perhaps, except for dimension), or how about the Turnigy T531BBD, or the Turnigy T541BBD?

Do You Know Any Other Servos Worth Mentioning?

JST Connector And More Wire Needed With Non-Stock Servos!

Whatever servo chosen, the proper wire length and a small JST connector will be needed. If anyone knows a good source for these connectors and the wiring, please post them. One can solder to the old stock servo wire and connector, but that option is not for everyone. One can also use a nano JST male to micro JST female adapter like this one.

By no means an expert on servos, I hope this post helps and will stimulate more input.


Suggestion Regarding The DS35 Debacle That Prompted This Post:

Flying again after three months downtime I did not think to check the forum here before ordering a new DS35 servo. I never would have suspected the unpleasant tail wag surprise awaiting me.

It is true that the DS35 is not listed for the 130X, but surely HH must have known where the up-tick in interest for their DS35 was coming from, particularly when listing and I quote a "DS35 Servo Mount" on their 130X hop up page. To change the firmware without notification as appears to be the case reading DoubleCH's helpful analysis, points toward product inconsistency that can potentially undermine trust.

Perhaps HH might consider a product recall notice issued to all recent purchasers of the DS35 servo accompanied by offering proper “old-style” DS35 replacement as well as payment for shipping and handling. It would convert a loss into a win for everyone and show great customer service.

I have had a TGY-D1290P on the shelf for a couple of months now, but have not installed it. My old worn out DS35 keeps flying very nice. I will put it in this weekend and report back.

Thanks for posting this. I looked through everyone of HobbyKing's servos and wonder, why I did not include this one, since I mentioned the JR DS188, both of which are tending a bit to the heavy side; however, if the added weight is no concern, the price is certainly right on this one.

Also thanks for posting the plug type. I suppose it would have been good to do that for all the others.

I have tried 5010mg servo (and so did liftbag). It works well but the quality is not so good. I bought two and both were dead very quickly.

Symawd, I was just going through some of the comments on this servo. There are a few warning not to use with 2s...

ie - "Please do NOT use this Servo with 2S! (like me) This part is designed up to max. 4.2V 1S and not max 8.4V 2S. You will blow up this Servo with 2S Remember that a full charged 1S LiPo has 4.2V! and not 3.6V"

At that low price I guess it won't really matter too much if it 'melts', as long as it doesn't affect the esc or make you bird crash.

Would be great if it did work out well

I'm pretty sure the 3 in 1 regulates the voltage at 4.2V because that is what the stock servos are rated for.

yes, from what I read, the 130x board puts out 3.8v to the servos so it would be fine.

HK warehouse. One person on here tried it and said it worked, but didn't post a whole lot about it, DoubleCH tried one he bought a year ago I think and didn't care for it. I'll probably test it mid May.

Amazingly, my order shipped in just 11.5 hours. Since when did HobbyKing become so quick?

FYI - Under the "reviews" tab on the global warehouse HK page, user Sajjad mentions using it in his 130x and provides a youtube link showing the 130x flying with this servo. He did later add youtube comments indicating he went to a DS35 and liked that better. The "files" tab on the HK page has pictures showing how someone had mounted it on the 130x.
